Subject: BTer Selected for 2006 ITU Worlds!

We have a lurker in our midst but this lurker has already had one fantastic thrill this season. I'm talking about Marvarnett and the thrill I'm referring to is that he found out about a week ago that he was selected for Team USA at the 2006 ITU Long Course World Championships! Awesome!

A quick look at his logs will show you that he appears to have a great deal of natural talent of which I'm sure will be well honed after a season of training.

Marvarnett says that he doesn't know many people here at BT and tends to be a bit reserved but I couldn't help but feel his selection for worlds was to exciting to let pass and that everyone here would really enjoy watching his progress and cheering him on through his season.

Congratulations! We're all behind you 100%!

Thanks Brett, I was feeling a little left out *sniff sniff*

However, I don't have that much of what Wookie would call "natural talent."

I didn't mean to omit anyone. I didn't know there were others. And why do you think you don't have "natural talent"?

I'm not offended, believe me.

Natural Talent? Uhhh..b/c I'm not what you would call "good" and I made the team kinda by default...there were only 5 girls in my AG. I'm just happy I wasn't last.

I think it's a top 15 AG finish at that distance at a qualifying race. CONGRATS by the way.

Maybe each race is different. I think my race was top 10 spots for my AG.

So if there are only 10 people in your age group, do you automatically qualify?

Yes, but you have to finish though. Its easier when you're under 25.

I am NOT trying to belittle ANYONE's accomplishments, but just curious how this is called the World Championships?

If this is supposed to be the World CHAMPIONSHIPS, how is it that just FINISHING a triathlon possibly gets you in?  I'm not aware of this in any other "World Championships" where simply finishing an event "qualifies" you for its Championships.  The Olympics, Kona or Boston - there are qualifying standards.

I know others can still get in (to Kona or Boston), but if I got in Kona via the lottery, I certainly wouldn't say I QUALIFIED for the IM World Championship.

Am  I missing something?  How is this an "accomplishment" or a "goal"? (I guess I mean that to a potential WORLD CHAMPION triathlete).

And NO, I would NOT be able to qualify if they gave 10 spots to my age group and there were only 9 of us entered.

Repeat: This is not intended to offend anyone.

None taken.
I agree with you (for the most part), in my case. I cannot be completely proud of myself for making worlds since I think it was by default. I am amazed by the opportunity but that is it. I have no chance there. If I go its just to say I did.

I am proud I did an iron, am 24 years old, and in a very tiny minorty for people my age. I am very proud I was not last in my AG, that I made a friend on the race course and even let her go ahead of me *why??* and she took second. I am more proud of those with a larger AG that, I think, earned their spots more than me.

Hey everyone! A couple of notes on the way I qualified. I did my first HIM last October and later found out that it was a qualifier for Worlds. Basically, here is what they do. They have 2 qualifying races. Last year they were: Cats Half Ironman at DeGray Lake, Arkadelphia, Ark.
USAT National Long Course Championship, Aug. 20 and

Great Floridian Triathlon, Clermont, Fla.
USAT National Ultra Distance Championship, Oct. 22

Each person that places top 15 gets a qualifying spot. But keep in mind that, I believe, if someone posts a better time, then they will get the spot. On USATriathlon's website they have the caviat of, "Priority will be given to the higher finishing place".

I did the Great Floridian 1/2. Since I didn't do the Full, it became a "B" Quailfier. What that means is that I have to place top 15th in my A/G in a regional qualifier. I placed 6th in my A/G (30-34) with a 5:12.16.

So then I put my application in and waited. I didn't get an automatic slot because I didn't do the full.

Yes, you can get a slot simply by being in the right place at the right time. Just like someone that places 30th in their A/G could get a roll down slot for KONA. That person would have qualified yet not been in the top 10. As we all know, 30 - late 40's is the most competitive age groups for Triathletes. So to see an under 25 qualify and want to go to Worlds only means, to me, that it's a long road of victories ahead. Unfortunately, I started at age 30. Not bad for 6 months training after hamstring surgery.

I can thank BT for everything training-wise so far. I used the Olympic training program and then I used the Beginner HIM plan because I had NO clue how to train. I followed the plans (FREE) and supplemented some other workouts. Masters swim practice and biking with roadies. I am also going to use the IM workout that is on the site for IM MOO this year.

GLF33, I don't think anyone takes offense to that question. It's a valid one! Keep in mind that Worlds is for Age Groupers. No pro's or elite's can quailify. It's for the "Average Joe/Jane". You can't compare it to Boston because Boston has a set qualifying time. But like the Olympics, they have a set qualifying race. If you're not on your "A" game that day, too bad. Ask Dan O'brien a couple of Olympics back.

TriComet, GREAT JOB and keep up the good work. I wish I had been able to compete when I was a bit younger.

If anyone is interested, I think I am going to put my workouts from last year on my logs. Right now I just have this years. Keep the inspiration up for us and everyone else this year! You guys rock!

You obviously haven't been around here long!

Thanks for the explanation. Makes more sense that pros & "elites" can't qualify.

Congrats to whoever qualified and good luck.

EVERYTHING is easier when you're under 25 ...

Haley + Dan: Congratulations on making the team.  No matter what self-effacing comment you can think of, it is still a pretty cool accomplishment!
