Subject: Rim trainer help...
I am considering buying a new trainer, a rim trainer, the Minoura Rim Drive Action 850 with remote. Anyone have experience with these? I no it will not tear up my tires, but will it damage the rim? Can it be used with carbon rims (Real Design Supersonic 40 with alum brake surface)?

Thanks.

I have used the Minoura 850 Rim Drive for over 2 years now and love it (I also have a Fluid 2).  I like the fact that did doesn't wear the tire and it does not hurt the rim; at least it hasn't on the 3 bikes (1 road, 1 tri, 1 mountain)  that I use on this machine. It is noisier than the Fluid2, but over all, it is a good, solid, inexpensive trainer, which has stood up to over 250 hours of use so far.  Just make sure that the wheels of the trainer on fully engaged on the rim and do not touch the tire.

I went to check out the rim trainer (it is used). Luckily I took my road bike with me to test. I met the seller in at a gas station, I put my bike on it right there in the parking lot. No matter what I did, the wheel slipped on every down stroke. I even adjusted the belt for more tension, I played with the alignment (both the left/right and the rollers). After about an hour trying to get this to work, I decided it just was not going to happen. I do not think there is a problem with the trainer or my bike, but they were just not a good combo for some reason. I know slippage is common on rim trainers, but this was too much for me. I really liked the idea of a rim trainer, and the price was very good, and I wanted it to work, but it did not. I am glad that I did not buy one from a store or online, then have to return it. She did not say, but maybe this was why it was for sale.
So, I will keep using the one I have now, 10 year old wind/fan type (NOISEY), untill I find another idea.

That would definitely be a problem for training...and frustrating too.  Maybe the rubber on the wheels was worn or had been subjected to too high/too cold temps?

Is there a store in your area that sells the rim drives that might let you test one out in the shop?

While I was in the parking lot I remembered what you had said, so I just sat there and spinned (spun?) for almost 10 mins, there was no change. I am going to be at my LBS today getting a fitting on my new tri bike, so I am planning to ask about trainers. I am also going to ask about rollers.
Anyone have good expieriance with rollers?

*Question, How hard is it to clip in/out while on rollers?
