I've been psyching myself up for my first 20 miler today and then last night I caught some kind of stomach bug. The marathon is Feb. 5. I did one 18 mile run that went VERY well 2 weeks ago. Should I shoot for 20 on Saturday, or should I just start my taper?

no matter what plan you're following there's always room for adjustment.

you should definitely do the 20 miler once you feel better. just one 18 miler is not quite enough as a preparation, in my opinion.

I'd say go for the 20miler but try to stay close to home. If it feels off then cut it short.

The other option is to try and get the long run in early next week, after your tummy has had a chance to recover.

Good luck in your race

If this is your first, then you really want a 3 week designed taper. But you also want that 20 miler for that psychological boost that comes with achieving it (20 miles is a big "number" that is mentally challenging more so than physically).

But I think that as long as you have gotten in all your other training that you would be comfortable to complete the marathon without the 20.

Just curious, usually a plan will have the 18 and then the next week the 20, without the week break in between, and then the 3 week taper. What plan are you using?

Personally, I would not do a 20 miler 2 weeks out. I especially wouldn't do one if I felt that I might be sick. The lingering effects of the two combined could make for a sh*tty 26.2.

I agree. You probably have been getting in a lot of miles in the last three weeks. Your sickness might be a sign that you are over trained or almost over trained. If i were you i'd start my taper, probably with a long easy easy easy 17 or 15.

Good luck you bad *** you!

If it's a stomach bug, that you'll spend in the bathroom for two days. I wouldn't do it. You'll be so dehydrated you want make it...if you just don't feel well, maybe try for Sunday and give it another day.

When I ran Chicago, I had a 13.1 mile run and a 20 mile run, and I didn't feel like I was ready....that feeling hit around mile 21..lol. I wanted to hope on the el in China Town and go home...I finished but wish I had a few more longer runs. I did my 20 miler about 2.5 weeks out, but since I jumped from 13 to 20 miles, I really racked my body and was hurting during the marathon. You should be okay going 20 miles since you've already done 18..imo.

Good Luck!!!

i found this plan online, it's hal higdon, that fit where i was- just having trained and completed a 1/2 IM. i lost a week somewhere in nov. which left 2 weeks for taper.

i'm feeling better so i think i'll go out on sunday and see how it goes. it would give me GREAT confidence to finish 20, but it's only a number-right?

Just make sure that you are properly hydrated.
