i decided to pick up a HRM since at times i feel i overtraining plus i hate driving my run routes to see how far i went i figure i want a gps unit and am looking at either timex speed and distance or garmin 301. so i would like to hear good and bad on both. also are they waterproof or not.

I have the timex and like it OK but I plan on getting  301 or maybe even the new 305.  I like the single unit rather than GPS/watch.  As a matter of fact I would sell you my Time/Distance for $75.  The face of the GPS has some scratches from a mtn bike fall but functions fine.

The watch of the Timex is waterproof to 50m (?) but of course the GPS is not.  The 301 is supposedly waterproof to like 5 feet but I don't think I would try it.

Plenty of posts on both of them if you search through this forum.

 I love my 301.

The 301/305 forerunner says it is waterproof but only to 1 meter or 3 feet for a max of 30 minutes. I would not even think of swimming with it. We use a 201 in our kayak and no problems, but we don't submerge it.

The timex is waterproof to I think like 90 ft. no time limitation.

The real disadvantage of the Timex is the separate gps receiver you have to attach to yourself, and then the optional item you need to attach to yourself if you want to download the info into your computer.

My personal preference would be the Timex, my lovely, beautiful, talented & fantastic girlfriend likes the Garmin 301/305 much better.

One other thing about the Timex, is it operates on an FM frequency and has less issues with interferece with powerlines.

It does not however work with the equipment at the gym, the strap that is. I am not 100% sure on the Garmin but I believe it does work with the equipment at the gym.

I've got the 201 and LOVE it. I'm also impressed with the new Log book that you can download your runs to and evaluate. Not sure what the Timex would have provided?
