Anything longer than 45 minutes and I am looking for any excuse to get off the trainer....spinervals are a great tool, but it is a real struggle for me to get through them.....
Outside I can ride my bike for 7 hours straight and still be ready to get back on....especially if I am riding with other riders...

Ha ha, I may never win any races or any other contests, but I win when it comes to outlasting boredom. Gee, what an accomplishment

Anything past 30 miles is pure hell to me. No matter what is on the tube it's not the same as fresh air and changing scenery.

You are ALL CRAZY! yes I have done 7:10 hours on the compu trainer - 2x60 miles with a 10' break last year. But I still think anything more than 90 minutes is pointless. My best IM came in Spring 2001 after 3x a week on the Compu Trainer - 2 of the workouts were 45-60 minutes and the third was 90 minutes. I did 5 rides outside for IM, all between 5-6:30 hours - ride time in IM was 5:39. Last year I did the mega hours on trainer and had my worst IM bike times. So - that proves to me, that riding over 90 minutes is not worth it. I do lots of focused workouts - not a second is wasted on the Compu Trainer. Warm up for 25:30 with a specific protocol, and then go right into my sets at certain wattage. No need to watch videos or anything like that. I have to keep my eye on the cadence/HR and watts - its focused and effective, but I can tell you when I get off the bike, it feels like I just biked 4 hours. This is how my athletes who train indoors in cold weather get to train as well. I prefer the Compu Trainer all year round to do my focused workouts - there is no coasting and no worries about traffic either. It's been a great tool over the last 6 years and I wouldn't trade it for anything else I have - and you won't find me riding over 90 minutes again either! :-)

But I still think anything more than 90 minutes is dumb....So - that proves to me, that riding over 90 minutes is not worth it....

Gee I've never been called DUMB before. Thank you.

Maybe based on your experience it "proved" it to you that longer rides are not necessary.  For me, I had NEVER ridden more than 60 miles.  I felt like I needed to PROVE to myself that I could stay in the saddle (mentally & physically) long enough to complete an Ironman.

Guess thats why I'm not a coach.

>>>Do you live in a bubble? Never? wow. and you are welcome for that first. ;-)

I re-read my post and changed it - sorry about the dumb comment. In my experience, yes, but I have proven this over and over with other athletes. it's a pretty big sample size. :-)

Again, sorry about the 'dumb' comment.

I've done a little over three hours in the past, but the most lately has been about 1:45 or so.

Luckily my past two LSB's I've been able to get outside and do them because of the agreeable mid-atlantic weather.

I don't think anyone here is advocating long trainer rides ALL the time. The long trainer rides for me (I've had very little over 2 hours and most are in the hour-1:30 area) and from the sound of it, many others on this forum, were when weather or other circumstances did not allow them to ride outside and are rare occasions. Even if you rode outside all the time, high mileage every ride is not the goal either. I ride 3-4 times a week with only one of those being high volume getting ready for IMAZ. The others are shorter, with a specific task at hand.

Wow…I can't believe some of you people! First of all I don't think I have the discipline to ride on a trainer for more than 3 hours….but that's assuming I have the fitness! Trainer rides are hard work!!!!!

Well done to all of you!

Can I ask what type of biking shorts do you purchase as well?

grvfrog - 2006-01-31 7:38 AM Jen told me I had to chime in on this...now I know why. Yes, I did ride 5.5 hours this past Saturday on my trainer, but my personal record is 8 hours, which was the day hurricane Rita hit. I was training for my 24 hr ride and had to get some riding in. I was supposed to be on a 200 mile ride that day, but there was no way I was sitting on the trainer for over 10 hours. At 8, I called it quits. My coach laughed when I told him.

Actually it's just a rough estimate...I'm probably off some.  the point is that an hour on the trainer at a given intensity is more of a workout than an hour out on the road at that same level.  Just think about how fast the wheel stops on the trainer if you stop pedaling.  You're working against that every pedal stroke.

Six hours!!! Holy cow!!!

I thought I was doing good with 90 minutes.

TH3_FRB - 2006-01-30 11:06 PM I think I did 2.5 hours once last winter...never again. You people who guage your trainer rides by distance are insane. You do realize that 20 miles on the trainer is roughly the same as 24-26 miles on the road don't you?

Joel, will this vary by trainer type? For example, will a mag trainer a fluid trainer and a computrainer all have that same difference?

2 hours for me. Any more than that and I'm ready to do my Normann Stadler impersonation and chuck the thing out the window.

My longest has been 1.5 hours.   I'm with Max and would chuck the thing into the nearest snowbank soon after that!  If winter wasn't here from November to March, I would NEVER ride on the danged thing
