Elite 2777 In my bunk with new shoes and purple sweats. | Subject: Parris Island Triathlon OK as the a. Where is everyone staying, or who needs info for motel/B&B? b. Do we want to go to packet pickup together, meet Friday evening, do something, anything? c. Does anyone want to do a Fri afternoon ride or a post race ride? d. Does anyone need directions to anything? Not just race related but also tourist or beach questions, churches, nightlife, reporting for recruit training, etc e. We have an excellent YMCA here and if you want to use the facility/indoor pool just let me know and I'll arrange it for you since they see more of me than my family does. f. Anything that would make your race visit easier. If you've been here before then you already know it's the most beautiful place on the planet. If this is your first visit then I'm sure you'll enjoy it. btw our LBS is open on Friday until 5pm. On race day I'm not sure if there will be a bike doc but I'll ask Al from gotrisports and see what he can arrange just in case you need something. The pool isn't THAT hot but last years fastest bike time was a 30 mph average. For the fastest swim time ask Jim "the fish" Christian. |

Elite 2777 In my bunk with new shoes and purple sweats. | Subject: RE: Parris Island Triathlon Good chance the water temp will still be in the mid 60's, however I'll select a spot and we'll see. The time of year is more conducive to a bike ride but I'm here to serve. Don't forget we could always hang out at Port Royal Marina or down on Bay Street and sip cool ones and enjoy the company. |

The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: Parris Island Triathlon Gulla- I'm staying at the beautiful 5-star Days Inn Motel. Kidding- not about staying at the Days Inn, but it being a 5-star. It's pretty ghetto is you ask me, but I only need it to sleep so I don't mind. The pool last year was ridiculously hot! I wonder how warm it'll be this year? Maybe I'll drop a line to the race director asking if they can cool it down for us on race day. After all- it's about us right? |

The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: Parris Island Triathlon Ok- I just emailed the race director. We'll see if they take my whining seriously. Actually I sent a short professional email. I'm curious if they'll respond. I doubt they'll lower the temp. in the pool for race day, but it's worth a shot! |

The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: Parris Island Triathlon Here's the race director's repsonse. his repsonse was what I was expecting, but at least I tried Janelle:The Marines do us a tremendous favor to even allow us on to the base even to have the race. To ask them to adjust their pool that they use everyday for military training would be beyond my bounds. The water temp will likely be the same as always as they use this pool for military water training. Jeremey

Elite 2777 In my bunk with new shoes and purple sweats. | Subject: RE: Parris Island Triathlon Ok guys here's the scoop. If you are staying at the Day's Inn on Ribaut Rd. (pronounced Reebow) then it's not too bad. Beaufort has several upscale B&Bs if you want to fork out the dough. I think this particular Days Inn is behind Friendly's Restaurant and across the road from my YMCA. Reminder, if you want to use the Y just let me know and I'll arrange it for you. The pool is hot. That's a decision approved for training by HQMC and we are never to question that, understood. (tic) |

The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: Parris Island Triathlon Yeah- last year I remember seeing a guy in the transition area with a stop watcha nd ke kept yelling at these marines doing the race. They were doing a relay and apparently their times weren't as fast as this guy wanted them to be. It was funny becuase they came across as being so hard core. Being my first tri, I was a little scared. I kept thinking- if he thinks they suck, then I REALLY suck. |

Member 8 Rock Hill, SC (near Charlotte, NC) | Subject: RE: Parris Island Triathlon This will be my first Tri ever so I really have no idea what to expect. I haven't even seen one (except on TV) so if you see somebody walking around like they don't know what they're doing, it may be me so feel free to say, "hey idiot, you won't need a wetsuit for a pool swim - go get changed!" I'm traveling with my 81 year old grandfather who hasn't been to Parris Island since bootcamp about 62 years ago so I imagine it'll be a bit emotional for him. He's pretty excited about seeing it. What are the chances of us taking a tour of the base either Friday afternoon or Saturday after the race? If there's going to be people at the Day's Inn, I'll check it out. How far is it from the race? |

Just have your dl, proof of insur, and reg. Go to fitness center for directions and I think the packet pickup is there. Plenty of signage and directions just OBEY all speed limits and watch for recruits. Formations have the right of way. PI is by far the easiest of the PSTS races but also the largest so be prepared for plenty of racers. |

The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: Parris Island Triathlon Last year when I did Parris Island I got home to find that I had little red bumps all over my arms, and some even on my face. Apparently there's some little bug/tick in the tree moss that gets on you. Anyone familiar with this? Is there anything I can do to prevent them this time? |

Master 1932 Savannah, | Subject: RE: Parris Island Triathlon The bugs in the moss only get on you if you roll in it. It was probably bites from sand gnats.....little tiny biting things that come from the sandy soil. Mosquito repellent helps a bit. |

I'm not sure what they were but someone told me that they fell from the moss on the trees, which seemed to be everywhere- especially on the bike/run course. But they could have come from the soil too. I doubt I'd want to take time to put on repellent in T1 ot T2, so I'll just be tough and deal with it. I just don't want my shaved head to be affected in any way |

Elite 2777 In my bunk with new shoes and purple sweats. | Subject: RE: Parris Island Triathlon OK girls, the cracker to the rescue. The absolute best sand gnat repellent is Avon Skin So Soft. Apply liberally. Janelle the red bugs are thick in any spanish moss and in most pine straw. Every time I see a touron gathering some spanish moss I just chuckle. Once red bugs ( Beaufort's chigger variety) get under your skin you can get temp relief by rinsing affected area with hot water. A good salt water swim works wonders but it's a little chilly for that. Avoidance is the best cure. |

Member 39 Groton, CT | Subject: RE: Parris Island Triathlon Hey guys. So I was planning on doing the Parris Island Tri since I'm in Charleston for six weeks, however I don't have my bike with me (its sitting in Alaska). The local bike shop here apparently doesn't have any of their rental bikes in yet. Is there a place in Beaufort that rents non-street cruiser bikes? Thanks. Hopefully I'll see you all there. |
