Subject: Lower back pain from running?
Anyone out there know why I am having lower back pain from running? Is it my shoes? I have been running in the same brand for years, and never had a problem before. Just seeing if someone has some insight.

Not a hard-core runner like some here but until they chime in, some things that come to mind.

1 - Have you gained weight? (the heavier I am, the more my back hurt)
2 - Have your work outs changed (neglecting the core/abs)?
3 - Maybe it's time to change shoes? (our bodies change with time and you've been running with the same brand for years)
4 - Has the shoe maker been changing the way they make their shoes? (skimping out on material/cushioning?)
5 - Have you been running on a different surface lately? (more concrete than grass?)
6 - Have you been stretching as much as you need to? (as I get older, I find I need to stretch more, for a longer amount of time)

yea, first thing that comes to mind is that the cushoning in the shoe is now dead, which alters the support of the shoe and changes how your foot strikes.

Looking at your logs, it seems like you are a fairly new runner, or at least still building up a base.

When I started increasing volume I was having lower back issues as well.  It was due to a lack or core strength.  I started doing some basic core workouts at home which helped a bit, but then I started in with pilates with an instructor that was a runner, and even just after I few weeks I've noticed a humongous difference.

If you're sure it's not muscular, then start looking at your form.  Are you keeping your back straight and chest open?

You might give yourself a rest day or two to let the pain subside, then try and diagnose what exactly it is.  It would probably be worth while making an apt with a sports med doc too.  He will be able to diagnose your stride and form, and tell you how to fix it (or perscribe orthodics if need be).

It was due to a lack or core strength.

That was my first inclination as well. Sit ups, crunches, yoga, pilates, etc. to help strengthen your abs/core will help.

Also, as was said, check the shoes for wear. Are they old? Do they have a lot of miles on them?

Think about your upper body position while you are running. If you are leaning too far back or too far forward, you are placing additional stress on your back. Try slight changes on your lean to see if it helps.

The other suggestions are good as well and are probably the best place to start.

Tight hamstrings cause lower back pain.

Stretch your hamstrings! Lay on the deck, back and head flat, bend your knees to your chest, use your arms to pull your knees as close a possible for 2 to 4 seconds, release. Repeat 10 to 12 times, 2 or 3 times a day.

I had a similiar problem when I first started running longer distances.  I had terrible low back pain and thought there was something ersiouly wrong with my back.  I went to a chirpopractor, and it helped a little until I ran again and got the pain got.  Well then I got really bad shin splints and saw the sports med doc.  He told me I was in the wrong shoes- i was wearing a cushioning shoe and needed a stability shoe.  Once I switched to my stability shoes the pain immediately went away- I haven't had lower back pain since.  So it really could be your shoes.  I'd make sure to be in the right pair of shoes before you try anything else.  good luck!

I also had back pain when I first started to get into running a couple of years ago.  I got some great advise to get my gate checked at my local running store.  They video taped me running on a treadmill from behind to see what type of runner I was and they put into a shoe to fit me.  I was more heavy then and need a motion control shoe due to pronation.  This helped stop the back pain, but I also had to run more limp because I was keeping my upper body to tense.

Stretching, core training and, in my case, pain killers help a lot.  I have had problems with back pains for years.  I must admit that I have a tendency of putting on a bit of weight in the winter time, which exacerbates the problem.  This is lessened to a great degree when I begin core work and a get a new pair of running shoes in the spring.

Core strenghening and stretching, stretching, stretching helped me. I had already had my gate measured and didn't use worn out shoes. I make sure to keep my core strong and keep stretching, much better than the back pain.

I have been upping my long runs, and I found last time the upper part of my bottom turned numb. I think it is the SI joint if I'm right. It is maybe better put my lower back.

I had back surgery 10 years ago above where this occured and I too was wondering what it could be.

Shoes? I have new ones, but I love my old ones and I am afraid to change. Or course New Balance discontinued the old ones.

Position? I think I run the same. I'm working at increasing my stride rate...it is about 86 but I have been working on it since the Fall.

I didn't run as much for long runs Dec/Jan due to illness and soccer injury.

I want it to go away so I can do my 1/2 Mary in March.

I had the same problem when I first started running, but core strength work and stretching my hamstrings did wonders for me.

There can be a zillion reasons why... but, only one that will make the biggest difference.

The only real solution is to get evaluated by a PT that specializes in running form AND biking position... It is not uncommon for back injuries to be cause by poor bike fit and not show up until your run (or at least be compounded by running). Muscular imbalance, poor core strength, foot placement... causing hip rotation... causing herniation of lower discs and rotation of discs... causing knee issues...blah, blah, blah, etc. ect. ect.. all or a few of these things can have a cause and effect type relationship to your lower back issues. As we age. things change... and, we have to accomodate those changes.

I went to the Sports Medicine Clinic in Bould Co. for my bike fitting and running form evaluation based on health considerations (not speed or aerodynamics)... BEST decision I EVER made... BTW, my health insurance cover the cost... but, the travel expenses were carried by me... I made 2 visits and went through about 1 yrs. of PT... It actually changed my life and made triathlons much more fun.
