Another big guy here, 5'8" and 239 this morning. If you have access to a treadmill, I've found that if I set the incline around 4-5% I can actually run on the thing with no knee pain at all. Running uphill minimizes some of the pounding and the treadmill will absorb some of the shock (mine has started to make strange noises). Also, look into the Pose running method by Nicholas Romanov. For now, keep walking, then add these techniques once you have lost weight and are ready to start adding some running intervals to your training.

Do it.

Hang loose.

Looser.

A little looser.

That's it.

Doesn't that feel better?

Noony -

Training for a Sprint will be a great way to lose weight and as someone else on this thread already mentioned will give you something to focus on besides calories.  Just think, come September, you'll be motivating someone else thinking of doing the same thing!  Actually, you're already motivating a lot of folks just by thinking about.  You go girl!

Thanks for all the support on this website.....

I'm now heading into my 8th week of training and have lost over 12.5 pounds and feel great. I have more energy and feel in much better shape......I have gotten so many helpful tips off this site...it is an invaluable tool. I'm also going to be doing my first try in August.......and I'm very psyched about it.

Thanks again.

12.5 lbs!  That is great.  Congratulations!  I'll bet you'll of come much further than you would have thought possible by the sprint tri.

Hi Noony,

I just joined this board, and am doing my first triathlon for many reasons, one of which is to lose weight.

I am 5'10" and 200+ pounds, and I am starting from scratch. I used to be very fit from cycling, but that was years ago. I just started training last week - swam on Wednesday, and walked/ran on Saturday. Running is hard for me as I also have bad knees, but I am doing a run/walk program. Most good running programs reccommend walking as part of every run - even for serious runners.

Maybe we can keep this thread going and help to motivate ourselves?

Yeah, sorry for digging up an old thread. I'm still finding my way around the site.

Just realized you can click on race reports from everyone's profile (smack head)

Thanks for bringing this thread back up.....I didn't realize it had been so long ago.

This will be my third tri season.  Weight comes off each season but I'm having trouble maintaining fitness and motivation year round.  I feel like I start over each season.  I'd like this season to be different so I'm working on focusing on goals to help maintain fitness and diet so this becomes a year round lifestyle.

Thanks for the well wishes.....weight loss is a constant battle and journey for me but triathlon training has definitely been a great addition to my life.  I'm certainly more fit than I would be on the couch and I love the BT community!

I hear you on the year round thing. Sometimes it's hard to look at this and realize with some of us it's a life long thing.

Not sure how you go about things now, but It's helped me a whole lot to record all my food and activity online so I can actually see whatever the deficit is I'm creating.

It's a HUGE motivator to me anyway to see I can eat 1700 instead of 1200 that day if I burn the calories that day, and still lose X # of pounds a week. (I try and aim for that magical 1000 deficit for 2lbs) Maybe if you don't do that now it's something to think about in the off season when you're struggling more to find the off season motivation.

This is my first season (I'm Athena too) and reading your race reports was a great motivator. Thanks!

Definitely race! I am 5'11" and 280. I have done 6 sprints and have seen women larger than I am racing as well. The run is usually the hardest for those of us who are overweight...but walking is allowed. I can run the 5K but occasion aches and pains have caused me to walk portions (like in yesterday's race).

There is a huge amount of support out there. Also, I don't know if you've read Jayne Williams' book "Slow, Fat Triathlete" but is very inspirational and helped me decide to get out there and race at my size!

Good Luck!!!

TOO BIG?!?!  Is there such a thing?  When I started all of this I was 295lbs.  and 35% BF.  And I was a guy which made the BF% worse because I do not have the naturally hot boobs and butt of the ladies(well I was not supposed to anyway).  Biggest advise I can offer is stay the course and build slow.  Not just training, but in all aspects of the lifestyle change.  You are not going to go from bad eater and exerciser to good eater and fitness queen overnight.  Let things build on themselves.  Start by eliminating or just reducing some of the really bad stuff.  Once undercontrol try to work on the next thing.  You can absolutely do it.  Trust me, if i can anyone can.  After 2.5 years I am down 80 pounds, 21% BF and looking and feeling much better.  Also no french fries in 27 days and counting.  woo hoo

1 side effect is none of your clothes will fit but that even gives you the excuse for a new wardrobe.

I'm really glad this thread got revived! I just signed up for my first tri yesterday (a women's only super sprint in October) and started having nagging fears about being the largest woman out there. I'm currently 263 pounds at 5'4". I'm already down nearly 75 pounds from my top weight, but still have a long way to go. Knowing that others have done a tri at around my current weight or higher helps me know I can do this, too! BT rocks!

Bunny...congrats on signing up for your first tri!  You can do it!  I did my first one at 240lbs and I'm 5'5".  I still have weight to lose but what I have lost has stayed GONE!  I am eating better and feeling ALOT better.  Good health and wellness is a wonderful thing!  I love this sport so much I even became a tri coach recently.  I am working with a few athletes and it's exciting!  I wish you much success!

OK I don't feel so bad about digging out the old thread now. CONGRATS on losing so much weight. I know what hard works that takes!!! I know what you mean about fearing being the largest. I still have that fear after losing 100lbs even though by July it probably won't be the case... but I KNOW the feeling.

I'm sure you'll do awesome though please tell us all about it when it's over!

I've raced at a heavier weight than you since I've been doing tri's.  Anywhere between 270-280 usually.  I'm 5'10" though...

If I can do this, anyone can.  I am about the most un-athletic person on the planet.
