Yesterday, during my first race of the season, I tried out the "leave the shoes on the bike" approach to transitions. I practiced it a bunch, and was feeling confident about being able to jump on the bike after a couple of cyclocross races - nothing like hopping on and off your bike 30 times in as many minutes to build your confidence!

My friend was there taking pictures, and he got this great video which, in his words, is like "a super-bowl commercial for why you should leave your shoes on your bike."

I'm the one in the white skinsuit - keep your eye on the guy who I pass while he's trying to clip-in... I didn't even notice him falling over until I saw it on the video.

That's funny!!

It's obvious the guy is a bit of a beginner though.  Heck, he was barely moving when he tried to clip his left foot in.

In the end I'm sure there are as many, if not more, videos of people falling off their bikes riding with the shoes already clipped in.

For me, personally, it's not an option.  I really only plan on racing longer events, nothing less than HIM.  So losing a bit of time doesn't worry me.  Also, there is NO way I'm going to ride 100km+ with no socks.

Yup - I agree - it's definitely not for everyone, and should be practiced, and has limitations if you want to wear socks, etc... mostly I just thought the video was funny.

There are actually two guys in the video (besides me) - the "beginner" who crashes as I pass him, and the guy in the red (Stanford) skinsuit you can see running after me, who was definitely not a beginner - he was a strong cyclist, and passed me a bit after T1 during the 1.9 mile long, 800 foot high climb at the very start of the race... but there's no question that I gained at least 30-40 seconds on him in T1, so all in all, my first attempt at leaving the shoes on the bike was a great success. Plus, it just feels cool

Well done!  Nice to see it done on video.  They never show that part on TV.  Thanks for sharing!

I feel for the other guy.  I was that guy on my first (and only to date) tri.  Except I didn't actually fall!  Almost though!

Awesome job! I am going to try the rubber band thing with my shoes and leave them on the bike. I hope it works for me as well as it did for you.

Great Video too!

Nice mount on the uphill! Did the guy behind you run with his bike all the way up the hill? You were probably out of sight before he did.

Thanks for all the ego gratification

The guy behind me ran all the way to the top of the short hill - it really wasn't too steep - the tricky part was that right after that short uphill, there was a steeper downhill with a right hand turn (and stop sign, and no volunteer directing traffic, of course...) so I had one shoe on and was trying to get the other one on but had to stop and deal with the downhill and turn before getting my second shoe on... But all in all it worked out as well as I could have hoped - my new Specialized Tri shoes were great - this was my first race in them and they were really easy to get in to and comfortable to wear without socks (although the bike only lasted about 40 minutes, so it wasn't much of a test!)

Anyway, glad you all enjoyed the video - I've gotten lots of entertainment and advice from BT over my first year of racing, so I'm glad I could give something back!

Scott

Too funny, thanks for sharing.

Looks like the person almost fell a second time right at the end of the video!
The person running with their bike was different than the person that fell.
