Subject: Swim Lessons question
Well, I have finally decided that I am going to get a coach and pay for swim lessons.

I have a few questions that I was hoping someone could help me with.

I am going for my 1st lesson this Sunday. I found this person online.

Should there be some qualifications and or questions I should be asking her prior to our 1st lesson? Or should her resume speak for itself?

Also, what is a reasonable rate? I am paying $35 per half hour and it is a 1 on 1 lesson.

Here is what I know about her.

She has been competing in triathlons for 11 years. Through google, I found some of her race results and know that she has completed at least 2 @ Iron distance.

She is a swim coach for a local private high school and also a local swim club.

Any help is appreciated.

She sounds like a good candidate for a coach! I'd maybe ask a couple of questions about her coaching style and see whether she prefers drill work and what kind. Will she analyze your stroke and help you correct any problems? Or is she going to mainly work on conditioning and strength?

jmc,
Nice job hiring a coach!
Sounds like she is well qualified.
Just make sure there is some structure to the lessons.
It sounds like she knows what she is doing but I've seen lessons where nothing really happens, and the swimmer doesn't learn anything.
$35 per half hour sounds about right.
I usually charge $65 per 45 minutes, but prices could be a little different here on the We$t Coa$t!

Good luck!

Update:

Had my 1st lesson on Sunday and already see a great improvement. Still a lot more to work on, but at least I no longer dread going to the pool.

Had my stroke analyzed, worked on breathing exercises and corrected my stroke ...all in 30 minutes, well actually 45 but i only had to pay for 30

Last night was my second swim lesson. And almost doing the full 25m lap, by tomorrow, I'll be doing the full lap and correcting my breathing.

I compared some local swiming instructors, and finally decided for the YMCA. Nice pool and a very nice intructor.
