Subject: cramp in both legs while swimming
yesterday i swam for the first time in the outdoor pool, it wasnt that cold, a bit colder than an indoor one. I had done about 900m broken, then setoff for 750 unbroken. but at the end of 500 i got the worst cramp in my right leg i just couldnt swim or stretch it it had just locked up, my calf was completely locked and then as i tried to extend my leg a muscle in my thigh locked, it must have taken a while to go, so the i decided (stupidly) to carry on, 50m later the other leg cramped! It really, really hurt and took ages to go. I don't ever get cramp, especially when swimming, any idea what casued it? was it the water being colder than i am used to (it was 8.30pm), was i pointing my toes too much, was it due to doing an hours biking a few hours previous?

I found I had similar cramping issues but in my feet when I went right to swimming after a tun or bike session- even if I stretched in between- if there wasn't a good 15 min and hydration in between- interestingly enough- recently I have NOT had the problem reoccur with just the actual changing clothes time in between but I have been much more concious of hydration during the run or bike and I do not swim after an especially hard or long run/bike- only on my medium or short if it has to be back to back. My night sessions seemed to be the worst also. For what it's worth.

I remember one poster suggesting that a lot of muscle cramps could indicate a need for more potassium. He said he remedied it by adding bananas to his diet.

hmmm...i eat bannana's like they are going out of fashion, maybe it was the bike combned with the cold, and not enough stretching

I've heard that not breathing correctly will give you cramps in one or both calves... not enough oxygen getting down there. Maybe the colder water made it more difficult for you to get the same amt of air as you would indoors?

OWWWWWW! I've been locked up before myself while swimming. Calfs tighten, toes curl, and I thank the lord I can touch the bottom of the pool. I have been locked up for over a minute before I can even begin to start loosening the cramp up. If that happens in the ocean - its been a pleasure knowing you all. This only seems to happen to me after about an hour of swimming, only while doing sprints, and only if I swim at night (usually I swim in the morning). For the most part I try to control it by hydration. I think that is the key.

If I'm still in the Ocean after an hour during my Sprint or Oly races I have other problems to worry about besides cramping.

Sometimes what I will do if I rest too long on the wall or get distracted by talking to someone else I will get out of the pool and stretch again. I have even sat in the hot tub for a few minutes.

Ok, this isn't really a scientific thing, but if I point my toes too hard and forget to use my feet more like flippers, then I get a monster of a cramp up my calf. I know that when I am tired, I tend to "bicycle" my legs, instead of kicking from the hips and that's just asking for muscular troubles. Just my experience. One other thing that leads to cramping of a more biochemical nature is Calcium. Everyone assumes Potassium is the missing element, but occassionally it is calcium....Ginger, got milk?!!
