I got changed in the office at lunchtime yesterday to run down to the pool and back for a swim. Before heading out of the door I looked at the reflection in the mirror (not vain, but the shower in the office has a whole mirrored wall...) and realised I looked like the athletic equivalent of a someone with pens and a calculator in their top pocket...

- Trainers, shorts, t-shirt.. all OK
- Cap and sunglasses... OK I guess (was quite sunny)
- iPod on arm strap... OK
- Polar HRM, plus foot pod... hmmm
- Timex GPS watch (old style one with the big thing strapped to the arm opposite the iPod)... hmmmmmmmmmmm (in my defence I only put it one because I'm worried about the calibration on the Polar. Oh, that really doesn't sound much better does it!)
- Goggles around neck. hmmmmmmmmmmmm
- Swim shorts under running shorts..... errrrrrrr?

I the end I just went with it anyway.

Does anyone else ever feel like this? How much could I have stepped my pace up if I wasn't carrying an extra 5kgs of this stuff? How do people feel about stripping things back to bare bones like our forefathers in the sport?

You forgot to put the Timex data recorder on the waistband of your shorts. And, where's the Road ID in case something happens? I didn't hear anything about hydration either so I assume you planted some water bottles on the route?

I am tri stuff junky at times so I make sure I do some "stuff free" runs and bikes. No watch, HR monitors, cyclometers, etc. Just a little barebones, enjoy the road experience. I eventually I revert back to the Polar HRM w/footpod and constantly analyze my pace and HR....oh well.

Yeah, it seems to me that with every new toy I get, I learn about two or three other ones that I "absolutely" need. My new wish is a HRM. I guess I wouldn't have such a problem really yearning for one except that I have spent my entire life training without a HRM. I know that it could help me in my training; however, I don't really need it. I guess I find myself trying to strike a balance between needs and wants. Occasionally I indulge myself, but I tend to just push off buying things until I don't feel the need anymore.

the HRM is a definate need.  I get the same thing, as I'll have my wrist-top computer (Garmin 301), my Ipod on my arm and sometimes my gelflask on my other arm.  In the pool I walk out with my paddels in my hand and my lap counter strapped to my finger.

Now...If garmin had just put an MP3 player and bluetooth in the 305, so it could be completely water proof and use wireless earbuds, we would be set.  I'd buy that up in an instant.

Right on!  Especially if it was a phone and Palm Pilot as well!  Sweet!

YES, it would make scheduling your buissness meetings around your workouts MUCH easier.

I sometimes change clothes at work, so I'll bring in my behemoth of a gym bag in with me.  My boss stopped me this morning and sked what I would carry in such a large bag.

"Dead bodies."

Really, this pic doesn't do it justice.

Where is your SwimP3? You seem to have most everything else.

I took the computer off my fixed gear bike. I think I'll start riding it naked, in an effort  to maintain balance and harmony in the universe.

I got into this sport soley because of the dork factor. My wife wanted me to start running after I quit smoking and she realized the one way to get me interested in something is with gadgets, so she bought me the Timex Bodylink system for my birthday.

Of course she had no idea how much money would be subsequently spent on everything else, but that's another piece of jewelry story.

Funny.. yes I was carrying my water bottle as well (with Fruit Punch Acclerade in it, which BTW tastes vile, its only because it costs so much that I am tolerating it to the bottom of the tub. I like the Orange anybody any ideas as to which other ones I might like?).

After the comments here I clearly had to go and get a Fuel Belt (plus they're on sale at my LTS)... big mistake as finished up talking to them about a Forerunner 305 as well... oops. Had totally rejected it until they told me there was a cadence kit as well!

Speaking of the FR 305 in a dork thread - I love my 301, and one of the best parts is the ease with which I can twist it off my wrist and twist it onto my bike (for easy viewing) in transition.  Wouldn't the 305 be difficult to see (still on your wrist) while riding?  All that work to be aero, and then checking your watch all the time?  Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Hijack over- to answer the original poster's question:  Yes, once in a while I love to leave it all at home, put on a pair of sneakers and shorts and GO FOR A RUN!  But most of the time, I'm loaded up with dork gear...

FOOT Pod?  Forgive my lack of geekiness, please, but why on earth do your feet need their own music?

Anyone using a windows mobile 5.0 device with Bikedo gps tracking software loaded. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/articles/bikedo.mspx

I'm looking for a new phone at the moment (cingular 8125) - phone/pda - mp3 player/stereo headphones - gps (add on).... all it needs is a bluetooth hr strap!
