Orange Beach is the closest place, followed by Gulf Shores. Pensacola is out of the way.

Driving home tonight I tried to make a mental note of the hotels in reverse order. Closest to the race site is the Perdido Beach Resort (5 miles) very nice place. About a mile further is the Island House Hotel (never been in it, but looks high end as well). Next there is a Sleep Inn, a Holiday Inn Express, and a Hilton Garden Inn (less than 12 miles to the race). All of these are on the beach and pretty close. There are some other hotels in Gulf Shores proper that I can research if these are too pricey.

Condo's are usually a more economical choice then hotels but that is typically dependant on staying 3 days. There are a ton of condo's, several within spitting distance of the race site. Some of the big rental companies in the area are Brett Robinson (they have tons of units, 1 complex the Phoenix 10 is next door to the Flora Bama. Meyer Real Estate and Kaiser Real Estate also have lots of vacation rentals. Please feel free to email questions. If you have any questions about specific condo's I can drive by and check them out.

Hey group..

Looks like i'm gonna be another casualty ..
bad weekend.. my housing connection bailed.. and i don't really feel up to going down by my lonesome..

I checked with the race director and she said that If i can find a replacement then it would cost me $10 to get the name changed (and I'm guessing that the replacement would pay me the $50 race fee)

soo..

anyone know anybody who missed out on registration??

I"m gonna miss meeting you all!

come on over to jackson for the heatwave! great race with a super flat bike course..

Manatee - thanks for the support. I am still in the race (wave 8) although I am not really ready especially with the change in the swim and the extended bike. It's alright though, there are 4 of us racing together - me, my brother-in-law and two cousins (we had 6, but two had to drop out) so we'll have a good time after. You won't be able to miss us. We will be the obnoxious group with matching t-shirts after the race. I'm not sure how many family members are coming to watch, but they are all getting shirts. We haven't finalized them yet, but they will probably have a shamrock with the 3 sports in it and say Team Ryan somewhere.

We are staying in Phoenix IV and Phoenix X. Unfortunately I'm not going down until Thursday. I'm hoping to convince my husband to leave in the morning so I will have time to ride the bike route at least once that afternoon. How is the water looking? Has it been clear or murky? I've only actually swum laps in the ocean once and it was in Cabo San Lucas so the water was so clear it was great. Every once in a while you get days like that in OB. I'm hoping next weekend will be one of those days.

Hey Tee,

The water has been pretty awesome looking the last couple weeks until Saturday went it went all to hell. Its starting to look good again. It's starting to get nice and warm and hoping the gulf will be 75 by race day. I haven't swam in open water since last October but will probably try to get a swim in this weekend. The extra miles on the bike are great miles, I think that will put us turning around at the state park.

You guys did good on the condo. I think Phoenix 10 is the one next door to the bama. Look forward to meeting you. I will come up with some post race identification system.

Manatee,
Cant wait to see you there. I have been practicing on the causeway going over the Cochran Bridge. I am trying to think if the Perdido bridge is taller. I don't think so, but I guess we will find out. Can't wait to see everyone there!!!

I found this website and wonder how accurate it is? It says water temps today are 78.4. I wasn't sure if I could tolerate cold water (wimp) and asked the lifegaurd this morning at the Y what the water temp was. He said it was 82 degrees. I think I can swing 78 if it's true.

Julie,

I went to that site but really question the accuracy today. 78 is the temp that most public pools maintain and it ain't that warm yet. Lets look at it again tomorrow and see if its a mess up.

Update on weather conditions. Current forecast for Saturday looks pretty good. Air temp at race time around 65 degrees with a south wind of 7mph. Its usually about 5mph more on the beach but who knows. Its a crosswind so that isn't too bad. The water is really warm for this time of year. I have been fishing in the surf alot and its much warmer than normal for this time of year. I don't know if the drought or what is driving that but its compfortable. I swam in Old River the other day and it had to be at least 75 degrees. The Gulf temp should be fairly similiar. Mulletman is not USAT so I think a wetsuit is legal if you wanted to bother. Look forward to seeing everyone.

I hope to meet the BT'ers at the race. I ride a black Cervelo p3 and will be wearing a blue one piece race suit. After the race, I will have on a briight orange jimmy hendrix shirt and bright green crocs. Look for me. If I get my number ahead of time I will post it.

Wind update. Latest forecast has a west wind of 10mph. That means a headwind out and a tailwind back on both the bike and the run.

What did everyone finish. I was #23 in the clydesdale division. Would have come in at 140 in the age groups. Hope everyone is well. My legs are a little sore but other than that I feel great. That swim was brutal!!!

I came in at 1:40:37. 22/47 in age group. I agree that it was one of my toughest swims ever. Breakers were huge.

Guys,
Congrats on the race. I can't wait to see the RR's. I'm originally from Pensacola and have been to the Flora-Bama many times. I wish I could've been there. Maybe next year.
