I was thinking of a guy who looked like he was in a cult kicking a donkey in the A$s. Then it would say "I belong to the Cult of Kicking Ass"  - something like that....

Maybe he has a grape Kool-Aid in his hand...

I LIKE it. Let me see what I can come up with... Perhaps with a "Z" on his shirt?

Late on the band wagon...but another Z1/Z2 groupie.. Started this time last year. Could not run 3 minutes without taking a break. Got a HRM, ran/walked on treadmill till May...All keeping in Z2.  Went from 11 min miles to a 10K oly Run of 8:59/ mile with a killer hill named Frank stuck in the middle. Now, my Z2 pace is about 9:15 on a good day.  But even better....i feel great the next day.  All zone2 for the first few months of 06, then some faster runs in April/May.    Im definintly drinking z2 gatorade.

A lot of people use the different set of zones and it really does not matter as long as you know what each zone represents. Most people on BT use Mike's scale which generates zones of 1-5 (however zone 5 has an a, b, and c which could be counted as a total of seven). The main thing you need is your heart rate at LT.....that's the number you need, then if you want to be on the same page with most of the BTer's then you plug that number into Mike's chart (can be found on the never ending thread).

autumn - 2006-03-01 9:02 PM okay, i've been trying to stay in the lower zones as well, but here's a question - where do you get your zones calculated? i was working out zones based on 'the indoor cyclist' and it was different than what my timex hrm figured out (similar, but off by quite a bit for some of the zones). went and used different calculators online and i got a range of answers. some list 4 zones, and some up to 7 zones. help?????

I love HR training. I love Z2. It is actually fun to run in Z2, and then those strides feel so zippy! I love Mike, and think it is a HUGE bargain, like, you're insane if you don;t figure out a way to fund it. He answers q's so patiently, so quickly, and he is very gentle when he kicks ass-- in other words, he is hard core about helping you reach YOUR goals.  At first I thought maybe he'd be pushing me too hard, but I explained my fitness goals, and he was able to help me modify certain plans slightly and come up with a race strategy that would keep me happy and healthy.  Yeah. I want a Tshirt.

Let's see - after a full season of following the plans and advice of Mike, Amy and Mark, here's how my season went:

1st sprint - 50" off last year's time on the most miserable day I have ever riden a bike. Cut 1:30 off last year's run.

2nd sprint - 6' off last year's time with more than 2' cut off the run

HIM (my first) - 6:07 - not quite what I had hoped - but I finished with a smile

3rd sprint - haven't done this race before - 2nd on the swim and 4th OA

1st OD - 10' off OD PR with 7' off my best OD 10k time

2nd OD - 11' PR (20' off last year's time) with a 10k run PR of 42:31

I did almost exclusively z2 work from Nov-Apr and then started doing a little more intensity (as the plans indicated). Probably 90-95% of my work was all z2.

This was my first season so I have nothing to compare it to but.....after an injury at my Oly on Aug. 20 and then a cold left me unable to train for my half mary 3 weeks later I still turned in a 1:40 time which beat my pre-injury goal by 5 minutes.  I credit this to the base I built up.  It's the only explanation I can think of considering I hardly did anything in the three weeks in between the two races.

edited to add: this format is really annoying and I only trained by RPE but still subscribed to the theory.  I'm on a HRM now - I'm a believer!

I don't know anything about training in zones but I try to train in my aerobic zone. I am going to be following the Maffetone method. There is a huge thread on his training at www.coolrunning.org

Some light reading for you:

HR zones

Lactate threshold

Training regions  (look for my post about half way through this thread)

Rowdy - 2006-10-06 8:13 PM I don't know anything about training in zones...
