I live in Canada, just across the border from Port Huron, Mi.

I'm shopping for a new bike.
Many of the closest dealers for different brands are listed in Mi when I do dealer searches online.

I do regular business trips to the Warren/Birmingham area, maybe 2 times a month.

Any recommended bike shops to stop and check out?

Possibly more important, any that should be avoided?

it used to be called scarlett schwinn, but i believe now its american cycle and fitness.

its in pontiac on woodward ave. so if you are in the b-ham area, its just a short drive up woodward. check them out, great staff, super helpful and good pricing.

It is a little out of your way but bikesportmichgan.com, is a good tri/bike store. Tom runs a good shop there.

I grew up in Port Huron. You can try Alpine Cycles on Huron Ave. and (I think) Glenwood. They were always a decent bike shop although when I was there at Christmas they were selling only ski equipment and clothing (which is what we were looking for). I'm not sure when they switch back. I still have my first bike that I bought from them in the early 90s. The owner is great and seemed to know his stuff.

I'm not sure what brands they carry, but it may be worth the trip.

you probably wouldn't want to go all the way to ann arbor, but two wheel tango is a great bike shop.

I stopped into Bikesport the other day.
It really isn't that far out of my way.

I was also at Fraser Cycle and Fitness, on Utica Rd.

Both seemed like good places.
I'll check out some of the other suggestions.

Thanks.

You probably already have enough suggestions but I have to mention my bike shop - Continental - which is on John R in Hazel Park.  We have bought a number of bikes there .  The owner is great and the guy who does the bike fitting is outstanding.  He put up with all my newbie questions and took all sorts of time to make sure everything was just right.

I'm a frequent offender at Continental.  Very good shop, awesome service.

I live near Windsor and bought a bike at Bikesport 2 years ago. I have been generally pleased with the service and the fit, and I certainly saved a lot of money. You do need to consider that you are required to pay GST and PST on the bike when you bring it back to Canada, and you may also have to pay a duty depending on where the bike was built. I bought a Cervelo so duty was not a problem. If you are going to treat the shop in MI as your LBS it does get inconvenient driving back and forth and taking the bike through customs. If you are going to use a Sarnia shop as your LBS you may encounter a little hostility about buying the bike somewhere else.

Trisport in Windsor has a fair selection of triathlon bikes, and would probably be the closest Canadian option. The service and fit are not as good though, and the price is higher.

PM me if I can answer any questions.

Personally, if you go the Windsor route, I would recommend Rob Parent & Ambassador Bikes. The guys there are awesome, they know what they're talking about, and I would recommend them 100%. Service is very good, and my experience has been that their prices are better than Trisports.

That is a good suggestion about Ambassador Bikes. I have not been in there for several years but it sounds like they have become much more involved in road and triathlon biking recently instead of just mountain biking, and I have heard some good things about their service. I don't know what brands they carry or how good they are at fitting. Bikesport has spent about 8 hours fitting and refitting me, all at no charge.

The only other shop I'd add...and it's a bit of a drive...but it's Endurosport in Toronto.  It's one of the top 3 cervelo dealers in the world, and the shop comes with great reviews.  www.endurosport.com.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I'll check out some of the other suggestions.

I am only mildly concerned about the border.
GST & PST are standard, duty hopefully won't be.

The CAD $ is strong right now, that only helps the price.
