Subject: grand canyon ultra?

Several years ago I hiked the Grand Canyon Rim-Rim-Rim.  The total distance was right around 50 miles.  Now when I did it, we did it in 5 days (3 out, 2 back), but we passed two guys running it rim-rim who said they were training for an ultra that went form rim-rim-rim.  Don't know why I just remembered this, besides the fact that as soon as I heard about this, I wanted to try it.

Has anyone heard about this as an organized event, or do you think it was just something they  were doing for fun?  Anybody tried it?  Anybody want to?

awesome, thanks.

When I hiked it, I did it in late June and we had to get up and hike at 4 am so that we made it to camp before 11. Even then we ended up hiking in 100+ degree heat, so I'm thinking if I'm going to run it I need to do it earlier or later in the season. I might think about it in 2007, but it depends on whether I choose to do IM AZ or IM MOO.  If I do AZ then I will have a good 5 or 6 months that I can devote to training for it.  If I do IM MOO, it would mean I'd have to either run it within a month of the IM or early in the season, and I don't picture myself up to ultra's by next spring.  So if not next year then definately in 2008.

So, its a self supported race? How is it official?

Looks awesome. I want to do it one day, what a great reason to go to the Grand Canyon!

that would be awesome to get a group together to run this thing.

It is not a suported event, but along the route there are campgrounds with water that serve as aid stations.  If I remember right, they are about every 6 miles, give or take.  So you would defineately have to run with at least a fuel belt if not a camelpack.

I'll be at the Grand Canyon (my 3rd time) this September for a week hiking trip with my son.  The R2R2R sounds cool.  If you can carry enough water for the first leg, I'd still do the South Kaibab trail on the way down.  There's no water until you reach the river, but the trail is not that bad, and the views are spectacular.  Bright Angel trail is longer, has water stops on the way down at a spring and again at Indian Gardens, but if you're doing it on a weekend, the foot and mule traffic on the trail is horrendous.  It'd be OK on the return run, since you'd be going uphill, but dodging the traffic going down would be nuts.

I've been there mid September and the rim temps were 70's and the temp at the river was 100.  Maybe October would be a better month.

I want to do that race too. I was there last summer and thought that the race would be AWESOME ! If there's ever a group running, I'd be in. I need to check out that link. I don't think I was able to find it when I was looking earlier this year.

It's definitely not "official"...

From what I've heard it's completely self supported, with no official "race dates".

If anyone is seriously interested in getting a BT R2R run I'm TOTALLY in. I've thought about doing this for while, but just haven't found anyone to tag along. We can have BrianCD sag

haha

I'm doing it on April 24th :-)  There's no organized event far as I know.  I'm doing it with 5 other guys, totally self supported.

We're trying to raise money for Operation Rainbow to help fund their efforts to continue sending medical teams to Haiti.  Ongoing medial help will still be needed there for some time to come.

Check out what we're up to at r2r2r4h.org, and if you can, please consider donating to this worthy cause.

Thanks!

Heck yeah, if there's a group that wanted to do this, I'd do my best to be there. It sounds like fun !

I'm stupid enough to be convinced to try it.  I'm kind of booked this year with races and my vacation time, but I'd be up for 2011.

From what I've read there used to be an organized race but the national Park service stopped issuing the permit for it. The only way to do it now is self supported.
I was thinking about it for 2011. It would be great if we could get a BT group together.

If you're interested, I have a series of pics with captions in my album of when my son and I went across the GC in a day (10-11 hours).

Not a true "ultra run", but our plan was to spend the night on the North Rim and hike back the next day. We carried the bare minimum of gear, but out packs still weighed in at ~20-25 pounds. We went in mid-Oct which is perfect weather down inside the GC, but temps were in the high 20s at night on the North Rim. We ended up catching a shuttle van and didn't hike back, but that's part of the story.

The point is; had we not carried packs to spend the night and went with a trail running set-up, we could have traveled lighter and easier. In retrospect, we probably could have done it ultra-style and been successful.

If you plan the food and water part carefully and be prepared for wide temperature extremes (we had 28 to 95), it's quite doable. Do NOT underestimate how hot it will be down inside regardless of the time of year you go.

I grew up in AZ and the GC is awesome. Been down inside and across several times and each time it's always an experience.

Here's a good article by Sunny Blende on fueling a R2R2R:

This run is one for the Bucket list!

Thanks for the links Bill...great reports!  I'm not ready for an R3, but I'll be at the canyon later this week for a rim to river round trip, going down South Kaibab and coming out Bright Angel.  This will be a run/hike for me and the goal is to just finish with some enthusiasm for doing more.

Pretty sure it's not a race - otherwise I would have done it.  But, the local Ultra Runners that get the luxury of running long every weekend, usually go up a couple of times a year.  I'd love to take the trek with some BTers, but we've got to recruit girls...my BF would not approve of me and dudes running for 12 hours (don't read into this too much...most guys wouldn't be super comfy with this)!

Depending on when, I could definitely be talked into trying this...

I am doing this on April 18th. Cannot wait, but the date is quickly approaching. I read that there is still quite a bit of snow on the north rim. I was looking for trail updates today but could not find a recent update.

I have set a 7 hour turnaround time. If I am not across in 7 hours, I will turn around. I will see how it goes !

Hey Mike,

So, how'd the R2R2R go?  Would love to hear some details since I'll be there this weekend.

Thanks!
