If there are any rooms left I'd try and stay at the host hotel, the Holiday Inn on the loop, since that is where the expo and packet pickup is located. Last year I didn't get a space there but was able to get a room at the other Holiday Inn in town at the last moment, it's not much farther from the lake than the host hotel. Other than that, just try and get something in the south east quadrent of town.

Well, I'm officially OUT.  Work nixed my plans to go to this race.

As for where to stay...anywhere in town is really good.  It's Lubbock.  There's no traffic!  I stayed at the La Quinta in Buddy Holly Square last year and that worked out fine.  And anything on the Loop 289 is great too.

I'm SOOOO jealous of y'all now!  This is truly a fabulous race!

For being such a tough course I'm amazed at the number of people breaking 6 hours.

And those are the Clydes, the category I will be racing in. I hope to go under 5...and then when I wake up on race morning and run it maybe I'll be able to break 6. This race is really dependent on weather conditions. Last year was pretty nice all in all.

I'm a Clydesdale as well and hope to be around 6 hours but don't know what to expect with all the hills. What hurts me going up helps me going down hill!

Regarding Dallas hills: Mountainview in Duncanville by Joe Poole Lake is a good workout. Never done Windhaven though. I live in Wylie, so that might be fairly close.

Dude. I really could have done without seeing last years results. My 6:27 half PR would of only put me at 6th in the 39 and under Clyd. I'm going to go and cry some more now.

Ah, it's nothin' to cry about. This might be though....

I did Buffman & squeaky last year. That's the same course as Buffalo springs half , only a shoter version. So I was prepared for the hills. But I made Buffalo Springs one of my 2 "A" races this year. I'm competing in the South West Challenge series, and Buffalo springs is one of the races for the series. If I'd have known how many fast guys there are in my division I would of made Buffman or Las Vegas NM Olympic distance my "A" race. There would have been a better chance of me placing well in one of those. Me and this other fellow are neck and neck for the #1 spot right now. He has 36pts and I have 38.....The hills will be good training for me, I am registered for the Silverman Iron distance in Nov. There are 9,300 ft elev on the bike, and 3,700 ft elev on the run. It's being called the most grueling Iron in the world...... So I'm going to go finish weeping now. Oh, by the way, good luck if I don't see you.

So how does that song go...."What goes up must come down"

I see we get a little extra descent. The initial climb out of the Canyon is most interesting. You have to be sure your bike is in the small chain ring in transition and this is not the race to try out the "clip your shoes onto the bike" trick unless your good at it, I saw more than one person last year wobbling around in the big chain ring trying to shift going uphill and others noodling around in circles trying to stick their feet into their shoes and strap in.

Well, hell. After looking at the macro plan that my coach put together for me for IMLP, he suggested doing this, so I guess I'm in. I was sort of hoping a month before LP would be too close, so I would have an excuse for not doing it. My wife will be thrilled with another race entry fee.

TTUTri - 2006-03-08 11:00 AM

I'm in -- my first HIM. The hills look a bit daunting. Anyone able to compare the BSLT hills to some places in/around Austin? (Please Please Please don't say 360.)

I know you don't want me to, but I'm going to say it anyway: 360. More specifically, the hill climbing southbound on 360 from Wild Basin Road to the Bee Caves exit. That's a 260-foot climb at a grade of about 12%, at least according to Google Earth. That's longer and steeper than anything at BSLT. The southbound climb from the 360 bridge up to the stop light by the church is about 150 feet and somewhere around 7%.

I'm not sure how they come up with those numbers, honestly.  The entire course is out and backs.  in theory you should climb EXACTLY as much as you descend.

And also, they don't let you enjoy the final descent because they make you slow down on your way into transition.  So really, you climb 8 hills and get to bomb down only 7.  And now that I think about it, there's another hill with big switchbacks that you can't really bomb down either because the turns are pretty sharp.  So, eight hard ups, six fun downs.  Two short downhill minibreaks.

I developed a stress fracture in my right hip about a month ago and there isn't any way I'll be able to run.

However, I got my registration switched to Relay. I'm going to do the Aquabike and a fellow Outlaw will do the run.

It's not the whole enchalada but at least some portion of Buff Springs won't escape me.

See y'all in Lubbock!

Bryan,

I am planning to register to enter in the sprint race. It will be my first race. Any suggestions or advice? Do you think that this is too tough of a course for a first overall race? Will the climbs be too hard to handle. The area where I train is fairly flat so the hills is what I am a little concerned about.

Also I was planning to purchase the BT tri suit. My only question is do the shorts have padding? If it does then how does it effect your running and swimming? Your help would be most appreciated.

You are asking about the difficulty of the course for you. That depends on how long your long days are, and are your legs strong? How long are your weekly long bike and run? And if your legs are strong naturally, or strong from from weights or even from riding occasionally in a big gear with low rpms then the hills won't hurt you to badly. But if you don't have a lot of streangth in your legs then you will be slow up the hills and the hills will sap alot from your legs. So it might make the run a little uncomfortable and/or slow.
And the tri siut has enough padding to make the bike ride a little more comfortable, but not nearly enough to negatively affect your swim or run. The padding on your swim might even help a little on your swim.

Did you guys see the pro/elite list for BSLT: Simon Lessing, Luke Bell, James Bonney, Michael Lovato, Natasha Badmann, Desiree Ficker, Andrea Fischer, Heather Fuhr, Amanda Lovato; to name a few.  I hope I get to see some of these guys in action.
