I've had some activity over the past couple months (walking, stationary bike, weight training,etc...) but I've officially started my training program Monday. I just started running again. I just got my bike yesterday. I joined a pool 2 weeks ago and discovered I don't swim as well as I thought. (No form and years of not swimming)

I'm debating on signing up for http://www.envirosports.com/events/displayevent.php?eventid=1556but I'm not sure if I'll be ready.

I'm doing a variation of the 20 week sprint workout.

Is this race too much? Should I try to find a more "standard" sprint?

At first I thought the swim was only 500 yards but I looked again and saw it was .5 miles so I got scared

Basically, I don't want a DNF and I don't want to waste 85 bucks.

Edit: I can barely swim 50yds without feeling VERY out of breath.

Good to hear you are back to being active! And no, i dont think that it is too much as long as you stick to your training and you are secure with just finishing the race and not to place. Being a little active over the past few months and lifting/keeping some muscle should help out a little if you have kept up some muscle, just be careful of overtraining, and have fun!

I would sign up. If you drop the $85 and you're motivated by not having a DNF on your record, you will push yourself to make it happen. If you feel like you'll be able to do the run and the bike, the swim will come...just take it slow. Good luck.

I think you can do it as well! You've got almost 5 months. I used one of the beginner training programs off this site for my first sprint tri last year, and I was well prepared. You will be too. Just follow Ron's advice for the plan.

That is a long distance for a "sprint", although I didn't see anywhere where they called it that.  A sprint is supposed to be a distance that the top amatuer will finish in 1 hour and that really seems like a stretch.

I think you should go for it, as the others said, based on my own experience of not being able to swim more than 50m freestyle my first workout and three months later swimming 2000m non stop freestyle.  You can do it.

When I began training for a triathlon I learned one thing fast...

I didn't know HOW TO SWIM, I KNEW how NOT TO DROWN...

Take a couple lessons (adult stroke lessons) or sign up for a total immersion class..

That was my first race ever last year. I trained for about a month (long story), didn't have my own bike and hated hated hated running. I come from a strong swimming background and trained for that the hardest because I could do it. I didn't follow a plan and ended up doing OK for a first timer. I'd say if you use a plan from here you will be fine, especially since you have a good amount of time. The race was put together well and I had a blast. I'm considering doing that race again this year.

I was pretty apprehensive before signing up for my first triathlon as well, but it ended up being the best $60 I've spent! I enjoyed it so much I am now motivated to get in better shape, eat cleaner, and it's opened up a whole new social circle of great people to me.

Sign up! You will do great!!!
