autumn - 2006-03-11 10:07 AM  you might want to go for a while w/o any hrm until your skin has a chance to totally heal.

I did. Yesterday was the first time wearing it since Oct.

Yes Chippy, I do wash it FOR THE THIRD TIME. My feet, now thats another story.

If you end up getting a new Timex strap. I'd love to know if it goes away. I thought about getting a new strap, but decided against it. I figured it was probably something in their formulation for the rubber / plastic that I had a reaction to. It's very odd because I have no other known allergies.

Good luck with your rash.

I'm not a doctor - and certainly never played one on tv...but that looks like the rash I get when I put on a bandaid - or surgical tape - evidently, I'm allergic to something in the adhesive. I didn't 'use' to be allergic to that stuff - but my doc said - that I may have develped the allergy over time, and that with continued use, the immune system goes more and more on the defensive - making the rash even worse. I think this is also true of people who may be allergic to bees - the first sting may not kill them, but their reaction gets worse with each subsequent sting....(not saying you're going to die from a heart rate monitor reaction - but I'm thinking it reallly looks like an allergic reaction)

so perhaps you are allergic to something in the plastic...and you've develped a sensitivity to it over time. I would also suggest perhaps trying a different brand.

Haley,

I had the same thing happen with a pair of gloves I used hiking (and cross country skiing). I had the allergic reaction (which is what that rash is inmy opinion) and could not get it to calm down until I went to the doc and he gave me some steriods. By the time it was healed I didn't need the gloves anymore.

Then on a late fall backpacking trip up north I had the gloves on and the reaction started again. That is when I decided it had to be something with the gloves. Even though I had wore them for a whole winter before the reaction started. Speculation it was a sweat / material interaction that cause the breakout.

Don't be afraid to go into the the doc if the rash doesn't calm down. I am not sure what to do about the HRM strap. You could try a new elatstic strap and see if that helps.

It's the Timex HRM strap (or at least the rubber portion of it). I've got the exact same problem with my S&D Timex system . . . grrr. I've heard lots of similar problems from other people with the Timex.

I never had a problem with my old HRM, but it unfortunately went dead on me and (silly me) I thought the Timex would be great because of the speed and distance features. Little did I know I'd never be able to use the HRM. I'd been on 6-7 hour bike rides with my old one and it never bothered me.

So now I'm saving my money for a Polar S625X. Let's hope it works . . . it's too expensive not to.

Change to Polar and get the soft fabric strap? You can also through it into the washing machine with the rest of your gear. (Though you have to take the electronic bit off first. Also MUCH more comfortable than the plastic ones.

Only problem is that the strap is not compatible with Timex so if you have the S&D one you're going to need to go the whole hog to get the 625 if you still want pace etc....

OUCH!!!!!  Looks painful as heck!  Are there any metal parts to the HRM sensor that you have attached to your skin?  The welt looks like the same kind of same kind of reaction I get on my finger when I wear a gold plated ring that was given me at work years ago.  It seems that I cannot wear any jewellery that is not gold or silver!!!!!  Base metals cause an allergic reaction.

There aren't any metal parts exposed on the HRM sensor. Thats whats confusing. I cannot wear earrings that aren't gold or silver either, sounds like the same.

Wow - that is a crazy rash...... I wouldn't be excited about wearing my HRM after that. It sounds like your skin is sensitive and can become irritated easily. The coniditions that you where a HRM probably increase that probabilty as well - sweat, heat, etc. Trying another brand might work - borrowing vs buying is probably a good idea at first. I would make sure it is really healed and then borrow a monitor try the KY or Buh Bump and put it to the test. Although it my be more of a cummulative effect. You might be at a point where consulting a dermotologist or sports related doctor might be beneficial. Limiting your useage of your HRM might be beneficial too, but then that kind of deveats the point. Hope you find something that works.

My wife had the same thing, it was from the detergent I used to was them in.  I used a fairly harsh detergent to kill the bacteria and the smell (mainly on mine), but she had a bad reaction, I changed the detergent and she hasn't had a problem.  Good luck it looks anoying!

1. Make sure you're rinsing the strap after each use, so bacteria isn't building up.

2. Try a hypoallergenic, gentle lube between you and the moniter.  Laugh if you like, but the best water-based, gentle lube I've found is KY Jelly - it makes the monitor read better and is super-gentle on your skin.

3. My husband has a dermatological rash issue that  is similar - it comes out when it's hot or humid out (the conditions recreated underneath your monitor).  Solution?  Zinc soap or use Selsen Blue or a simliar zinc-infused shampoo to calm the rash down.

Hi Comet.  Nasty rash, girl.

Question: does the elastic part of the strap on your timex transmitter cause the same irritation or is just the plastic/rubber portion?  If the elastic part does, you might be out of luck.  I don't know of a transmitter strap that doesn't include it.  If not, you might, as others have said, try the Polar WearLink.  You can see in the picture below that the strap is all fabric except for the metal tabs on the end which attach to the rectangular transmitter in the center.  The transmitter itself is hard plastic.  I've never worn anything other than this one but I find it to be very comfortable.

Hope you get this figured out.

Tom

It is probobly from the monitor reacting to the soap you use when you shower. Try not showering for a few weeks and see if that helps.

Those can't possibly be as accurate as a monitor with a strap.  What do they use to determine your heartrate?  Your peripheral pulse?

I have only tried them at the store.  They are NOT as good, just an option.  The one that I saw requires you reach across with your other hand and touch the top and bottom button to get a pulse.  I did not buy one, but they are an option.  Also, it looks like you can use them for swimming too.

I'm curious whether Comet and/or others have had any success with switching to a different brand of HRM (especially the Garmin 301/305, Polar, or Polar with WearLink strap).

I recently started having similar issues with my Timex HRM strap (the actual sensor/transmitter part, not the elastic strap) after having used it for about eight months without any problems.

"I tried to use the least obscene picture I could take."

Obscene? Nothing obscene about it...

And we don't need a BIGGER picture, just a wider angle...
