Subject: Wheelset/cassette question

Hey all,

Over the weekend I won a door prize of Bontrager Race Lite Aero Wheel-set.  There is not cassette with them of course.  I currently have a 2005 Trek 2100 with Bontrager Race Wheel-set with a 12-26 SRAM 950 9-speed cassette.  Now I would like to get a new cassette for the new wheel-set, but I don't know if I should get the same cassette as I have or should I get something different?

Looking for any information or opinions on what might be the best route from the above information.

Thanks for the advice.

Dirk

Depends what your plans are for the lighter wheels. Are you going to use them as race wheels, or as a back-up set?

I'd personally get an 11-23 to use for flat rides and race day, but that's just me.

I was thinking of using the new lighter wheels as race wheels, while using the others for training and on the trainer.

I guess the next part of the question is why the 11-23 as opposed to the 11-25 that would be on the training wheels?

Agree.  You already have a climbing cassette with the 12/26, why not get something that will give you some flexibility.

Sweet door prize!

Something to think about when swapping cassettes, if you have lots of miles on an old cassette/chain combination, and you introduce either a new cassette or a new chain into the mix, the wear on the remaining piece of old stuff can cause the old/new combination to make noise and possibly even jump gears.

But to answer your question, I'd get a new, lighter cassette (Ultegra-level or better) to go with those pimpin' wheels

Like I said, if it were me .......... I only have a 23 on my bikes currently, so I would stay small. In fact for race wheels I'd personally probably go for an 11-21 ....... but that is really my road racing background getting in the way.

The 11-23 will make the jumps between gears a little smaller than a 12-25 making it more likely that you will be in an ideal cadence.
If you are using a standard large chainring (52 or 53) you may want to consider a 12-21 or 12-23. The 11 will only be useful if you are spinning out on the top end and most people do not have that problem unless they are going downhill.

Below is the gearing for the 9 speed Ultegra

(11-21T) 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 21
(11-23T) 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23
(12-21T) 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21
(12-23T) 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 19, 21, 23
(12-25T) 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, 25
(12-27T) 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24, 27

Hey,  it just dawned on me...  I've got an almost new (maybe 200 miles on it?) 11-23 Dura-Ace cassette you can have cheap.  PM me if you're interested...

I like that 11-21 combo too, but like Rick, it's the bike racing background coming out.  Use them on race day as long as it's not too hilly.  Or just buy 2 cassettes and swap them back and forth, depending on course elevation.
