Has anyone figured out a way to read a book while in the aero position on the trainer?

Yes I know that there are attachments that I can clip onto my handlebars, but those are designed for bikes without aerobars.  I'm looking for something that will allow me to read while I'm hammering away on the trainer and still allow the book/paper to be in front of me, not off to the side.

Whattya think?  Is my best bet just a music stand as close as I can get it to the handlebars?  Anyone had any luck with this?

I'm not sure about you, but I'd need a waterproof book to read on the trainer. Audiobooks would be much better.

The problem with that is that there aren't alot of textbooks/scientific articles that have been made into audio books.

Ideas?  Anyone?

Honestly, if you can read a book while riding the trainer, you aren't working or concentrating hard enough. Just my $0.02.

Tried reading...couldn't get into it. I did listen to a good portion of the most recent Harry Potter audio book.

A music stand placed in front of the aerobars. Can be angled, can adjust the height. I haven't tried it, but thinking about it seems an adequate solution.

Interesting post Mike. Why do you say that? If you're doing a base training type of ride on the trainer, don't you get a little bored?

>>>No, I don't do base trainer rides ;-)

I am either working on my pedal stroke or cadence drills, or some time of 'set' where I am using specific gearing, watts, HR - plus with the Compu Trainer there is lots to do - you can watch efficiency, power output, balance of power output etc.

If you want to listen to music on the trainer that's one thing. Take a look at my trainer workouts in my log to give you an idea.

Agree- Try doing some Spinnerval dvd's- they're a killer workout and help pass the time quicker.

Also you have to remember that you're not going to be able to read in a race.  What are you going to do if you have to bike 55 miles and get bored?  You should learn how to deal with boredom while you train so you're used to it in case you have to deal with it on race day.  Just my opinion.

If you can read while working out, you're not working out hard enough.

Well, a 55 mile bike ride on the road with cars/people/animals/aliens out there with me, there's plenty to keep me from getting bored. Sitting on a stationary bike for 30 minutes gets a little boring now and again.

However - am I wrong in thinking that I shouldn't be killing myself every workout? Some days are supposed to be easier than others, correct?

Some days should be easier, but every work-out should have a purpose, and should be executed consciously. I do some base work on the trainer, but I find it difficult to stay on the thing for long enough to really do a good base workout, ie. I'm pulling my hair out after an hour. I'll use the trainer for tempo, cadence and an occasional Time Trial effort, nothing that I can read through ( I like to watch the "cops chase bad guys" shows on Spike) For real base work in the winter, I just dress in an entire load of laundry and suck it up in the cold. I'll do my homework after I workout. Re-zoning requests are even more boring than long trainer rides

I found that a reader's digest, with the cover flipped around to the back, fits nicely on my aerobars, or i can hold it up at the end of my aerobars... The articles are short (if a bit grandmotherly), so keep my interest, and i don't mind tearing the mag apart... I think a book might be a bit harder to handle.
