Subject: Riding today...... No real point to this post but I was spinning along on my long bike ride this morning and I suddenly became very aware of what a great time I was having. The sun was shining and it was beautifully warm. I was about 25km into my 45km ride and was feeling great. I'm lucky enough to live in the country and was out in the quiet country lanes riding through gorgeous little villages dotted with thatched cottages covered in flowering roses, stunning views across the coutryside, quietly passing horses and riders and even chasing down a rabbit at one point! I remembered then, that on Tuesday evening I was out running my long run on the other side of our small town, through a couple of villages I haven't been to in a couple of years, and back into town along a 1 mile boulevard lined in flowering horse chestnut trees as far as the eye could see! And the point of this totally out of character ramble, well, I would never have been doing this if I wasn't focused on triathlon. I used to think of the sessions as a 'work'out but I realised that it was actually a 'joy'out session. Getting out into the countryside, getting fitter, seeing things from a totally different viewpoint on the bike or on foot, challenging myself, losing track of time in our fast paced timebound world - it doesn't get much better than that and I have triathlon to thank for it. When it's like this I can see myself doing this until I drop - and in the darker, colder hours I'll remind myself of what it's brought me so far. I'll never break any records or even top my age group but who cares when just training for a sport can bring so much richness into your life. |
