This is a great race! Great support, fluid available, and well put on. Yet still small enough (120 athletes usually) you have a good possibility to take top 3 in division; even if you are slow like I am.

Would this be a good first multisport?

Any sprint distance event is going to be a good first choice but as short races go this is a tough one. Hills, Hills, Hills. You have to be willing to moderate your pace somewhat or you will blow out before the second run.

Is this the Defined Fitness Duathlon? This was my wife's first multisport race two years ago. The bike leg had a long climb, which appears even longer because of the terrain. The return was fast and fun. I was expecting her to be cussing me out on the bike leg, but she looked like she was smiling.

Not sure how the course is now, I didn't race it last year and I heard the course was changed.

Jay Benson is also coming up. It has a few hills on the bike course, but I don't remember any serious climbs. The run is flat.

This is the same race as the Defined Fitness Du. I'm not sure what happened with respect to sponsorship but Mark Mico is still the race director.

I think the bike course is only being shortened a little but am not sure. It departs from Rio Rancho HS and heads up Northern to Unser then out Unser to a water tower that sits on top of a hill. It is a challenging ride

The Jay Benson is also a good first event, lots of different people with lots of levels of ability. The down side is that it's crowded.

Thanks for the info everybody. Me and ABQkid have signed up for both the RR Duathlon and Jay Benson, so it should be fun. We'll probably go check out the RR course next weekend just to see what's what.

The bike leg was shotened by 5k so that the big hill at the water tower is no longer an issue.

I'm getting in on this pretty late, but thanks for the information about the RR Duathlon and the changes in the bike course.  Does anyone know if this race very crowded?  This is my first race with any type of transitions, so hopefully it will benefit us (Lobo) for Jay Benson.

Crowding shouldn't be an issue. The race had 91 people last year whereas the Jay Benson had 386. With 91 people you can pretty easily find yourself one of only a handful in transition at any one time. It's likely that you'll hardly be aware of anyone else. It will also be helpful to get to the race early, like an hour or more, so you can check out how people are setting up in transition. If you haven't set up in transition before or havent read or heard about it you should bring a towel. My first Tri I didn't know that and I ended up rummaging through my gym bag during transition.

Thanks for the advice on the towel, We'll make sure to bring one. I went today and drove the course (Bike leg) and there are definitely some hills. Looks like once you make it to the turn around you will fly coming back.

Good luck this weekend NM BTers. I'm looking forward to reading the race reports. I'm sitting this one out, but hope to be in the Duke City for Jay Benson in May.

Rather than looking at bib numbers you can just look for people wearing New Mexico Outlaw uniforms. There will probably be at least three of us in uniform, maybe more. I am the big guy with hair and Cody is the big guy without hair, he ran his off.
