Always get a medical checkup once and awhile.  Or when it's your time it's your time to go.

No, it was cool today  yesterday.  The two deaths were reported on the radio as retired law enforcement, heart attacks, one near the beginning and one two miles from the end.

Both deaths were believed to be cardiac related. Both were retired police officers as well. One was 53 and had a heart attack at mile 24. The other was 60 and a 11 time LA marathon finisher who collapsed at mile 3. They think he was under medical treatment for a "cardiac condition".

I understand the weather conditions were ideal (cool).

Very sad.

Cops don't typically live that long after they retire. I think it has something to do with all of the stress and everything that they deal with during their careers. So that probably made them even more prone to having problems. If you are going to do something like that, you really should get a physical before hand, especially if you are over the age of like 40 or 45.

I'm 57, does that mean I need 17 physicals?  It's not so much the age, but what you've been doing and eating for the past 20 years.  Yeah I agree though, if you're over 40 and the most exercise you've gotten in the last 20 years is jumping to conclusions, then maybe you need a once-over before doing a 5-K, never mind a marathon!

Sad.  Weird how the two who died were both law enforcement individuals.  If anybody sees an article with more details, please post it.

Whats scary about that is that one of them was an 11 time finisher, so he must have been leading a somewhat healthy lifestyle. At least healthier than most middle aged Americans. I do think that everyone over 45 should for sure get a checkout before doing anything like this, even if they have been keeping in shape.

i got the day off from work (shut down on two parellel roads) i had my massive date that day (see COJ, look for mushy) and it was cool and slightly windy most of the marathon time. the coaches that where in my store the day before kept commenting on how great the weather was (i kept hearing "perfect running weather" and "its 2pm and its still so cool out")
