I think this might be just a streching issue but....

I am at the gym last night and I was going to do my 3 mile run on the treadmill. I strech for about 10-15 before hand, jump on and start increasing speed. I usually run a about an 11 minute mile for all 3 miles. Well I decided to push it for the first mile and cranked up the speed to an 8:57 mile and was able to run at that pace for the first mile. Once I hit that mile mark I slowed back down to a fast walk to catch my breath and all of a sudden my calves tightened up and got bad shin splints. I tried to pick up the pace and do my 11 minute mile and it was really pain full. it got to the point that even the walk was hurtting. I stopped after mile 2 as to not hurt myself.

Question?
1)Is it growing pains that I was feeling?
2)Should i have stopped and streched then started again?
3)Should I have just pushed thru the pain?
4)I went on a long bike and mnt. hike Saturday could this be a result?

Thanks for any and all advice
Steve

First thing came to mind was...have you ever ran a mile at that pace before?  Last year I did a PB in a 5k and it was three minutes faster than the year before, but later that day and the next my shins and calves were REALLY sore.  I think it was from over extending the muscles and taking longer strides than I was used to.  Also, be carefull over streching them now that they are sore because you might make that matter worse.  This is from my experience, but I would give a couple of days and work speed work into your training slowly...intervals?  Hope this helped you out.

If I am alternating days with running and biking, I can experience tightness in one or the other calf - never both. I'm not sure why this happens, but typically the pain doesn't creep up on me. I can run 3 miles without a problem and suddenly my calf will cramp up like a charlie horse, and I must stop. When I focus soley on running and forego biking altogether this does not happen to me. I always stretch and warm up and cool down with a brisk walk.

I would say two things.  First possibly hydration may be a cause of the cramping.  You should consider using a sports drink if you do not already.  Make sure you are replacing the electrolytes.  Second would be stretching.  Its okay to stretch before, but you should really be stretching afterwards to help improve flexibility.
