Subject: Emily takes a tumble

Emily my 11 year old triathlete daughter (screen name EmilyG) and I went biking after I came home from work. This was her second time outside with her clipless pedals. We did our normal route in a nearby quiet neighborhood I stay close by and coach her on riding basically to help her be safe. On the way back to our neighood we went up the big hill which Emily flies up and I am a bit slower. She went straight up and over instead of to the right which is more gradual downhill.

I get to the top hill go down the hill, have to use my brakes hard since it is a sharp 90 degre angle after the steepest part...then I see Emily. She had taken a tumble, was shaken up and had two black knees from sliding on the driveway and other bumps and scarpes. She went to fast and wasn't able to make the turn but she did clip out. She was smart and missed the electric pole, huge 5 foot rock, the sharp curb, mailbox, basketball hoop...I don't know how she missed all the stuff and drive in the small space between the mail box and basketball hoop. After looking at where she crashed she was so lucky.

She has multiple scrapes on both her knees, her hip, both her forearms, and hurt her thumb. She bummed as her bike handlebars seem to be bent.

Thank goodness she was safe from all the hazards and the UPS truck was not making the turn as she came flying down the hill. Scary stuff for a parent...I wish it was me not her that fell.

Sounds like a lucky girl.. I know if the kids have to endure something bad we wish it was us. Glad she is ok and doesn't to be more then bumps and bruises. Just ensure she is OK and love as always. Being bummed her handle bars are bent is a good sign she is going to get back on that bike and ride again. Sorry she took a fall she'll bounce back.

I hope she bounces back real quick! Even though you wish it was you that took the fall...your bones are a little more likely to break than Emily's if that's any consolation. I was always proud of the bumps & bruises I got as a kid from sports. If I didn't always have at least one healing rapsberry somehwere on my body, I wasn't playing hard enough!

Sorry to hear about Emily.  Hope she's ok.  I'm sure the bruises and scratches will go away soon.

Maybe you'll see me falling next week when we ride.  It's likely to be my first time riding outside with clipless.....

Sorry to hear about Emily's mishap.  Hope she heals quickly.  Sometimes you have to exceed your limits to know where they are - hopefully she will come back as a more skilled, smarter and safer rider.

Sorry to hear about Emily's fall.  Wow, been there too.  Just a bit more practice, I guess that's how we learn through our mistakes.  I'll look at the bike when I come down too, tell her don't worry, anything can be fixed!

tell Emily there are two types of riders:  those that have fallen and those that will.  Now that she has that out of the way she can get back to mastering those clipless pedals.

Glad she's ok.  Very cool that your pre-teen daughter is even interested in riding clipless.

Now I'm in the fallen category so there is nothing to worry about.

Thanks for the kind words.
