1. Do you have to register for this one the day after the race a year before, just like CA, WI, FL, etc.? Or does it stay open a little longer? (since it's so early in the season)

This race opens up for registration on-line. I know of no same day race-site registration. This makes it easy for first timer's to enter.

2. Do you have to live where it's warm in the winter to train for IMAZ? Any of you had to ride mostly on the trainer and swim only in the pool through the winter?

Not really... but, it would be an adavantage. There are many who do the race and not been on the road or running out doors until the race. A lot train indoors - indoor pool, bike trainers, treadmills. I would say that 60% of my training for both IMAZ's was done on a trainer and about 30% was done on a treadmill... And, I live in a climate similar to Tempe... the problem is not only cold temps but it's also a time issue. The sun sets so early in the winter that the only logical way to get any biking done is on a trainer.

Yes, early sunsets make it real hard to ride other than on the weekends until march...

Tempted to go back to waiting tables, it's nice to be able to see sunshine every day

devotchkatata - 2006-03-31 3:09 PM How exciting!!! Good luck to all of you who's racing in IMAZ 2 questions: 1. Do you have to register for this one the day after the race a year before, just like CA, WI, FL, etc.? Or does it stay open a little longer? (since it's so early in the season) 2. Do you have to live where it's warm in the winter to train for IMAZ? Any of you had to ride mostly on the trainer and swim only in the pool through the winter? I am considering this race for my first IM (2008), because I can drive there from Denver, and I like the bike course profile, but there is no way to get open water swims here in the winter, and often it's too icy for riding in the winter...

I live in Chicago and had to end up doing almost all my training indoors.  I did several 4 and 5 hr trainer rides and did one 6 hr trainer ride.  I did almost all my long runs on the treadmill including my 3 hr run.

I wouldn't recommend doing IMAZ if you live above the mason-dixon line because:

 1)  it's not nearly as fun for training for a september IM...and after all we do this for un

 2)  there aren't many folks in the area that are doing crazy long training this time of year so you're misery will have little company.
