Subject: How cold is TOO cold?

I am doing my FIRST tri in a river on April 22nd in New Roads, LA. The website said the water could be as cold as 65 degress F. I do not own a wetsuit, how cold is too cold to race comfortably in?

Last year, I won (as a doorprize) a free entry to this tri, but passed on it because I heard a wetsuit was a "must."

Obviously different people are going to have different tolerances. Why don't you go out there this weekend and literally test the waters?

Cool is good.  If the water is too warm it just sucks energy from you.  Back in the day I did my Red Cross Lifeguard Class in an indoor pool that was in the mid to upper 80's.  Just being in the water made you tired.  Also if the water is cold it will encourage you to get the hell out as quickly as possible and move on to bike and run.

Go out and find out what is too cold for you!  I have no problem with 65 water, but my wife wouldn't go near it with a wet suit, so I think to each their own.

My 1st race water temp projected right around 60. Race director said I s/b fine w/ sleeveless (I'm thinking about a neoprene cap as well.) He said only 1 person did not wear a w/s last year. At 65 sounds like you'd need one to be comfortable or do you like pain?

You could rent a wetsuit for the race.  Go to wetsuitrental.com or figure out if a local shop rents them.  I did this for a race last year and am very glad I did so.

That's not a bad idea, I wonder how much they run

I may go out this weekend to test it out, good to have OWS practice anyway before the race.

I was one of maybe 3 people last September in Enumclaw, WA with no wetsuit. Race morning water temp was 61 if I remember correctly.

I had been training in roughly the same conditions so it wasnt much of a shock. I did cramp up pretty bad in my calves toward the end.

Now, with that said, I now have a Ironman Instinct in my closet as I never want to do that again.

Go try it out. It will be a bit of a shock when you jump in, but once you start swimming at full intensity it should warm up considerably. And if you can find a rental, see if they will let you pick it up early so you can try it out once or twice. Wetsuits can feel a little restrictive in the arms and chest, so it's good to get used to them before the race.

Good luck next week!

wetsuitrental.com indicates $30 plus $6 in shipping cost.  I rented for $40 at my local shop.  You usually get them for about a week so you can get in some OW practice and some on/off practice, too.  I know that helped me immensely.

April 2004 I did a Sprint with 1/3m swim in ~65F water without a wetsuit. Never again, calfs cramped up in the water on the last 1/3rd and when I got out of the water my legs didn't want to move.

I rented a wetsuit from wetsuitrental.com for St Anthony's (April 30th) and they sent it to me at the end of last month (so I would have time to try it out and feel comfortable). They are giving away 2 wetsuits each month right now - so you should sign up for that (I actually won one of the wetsuits in March!)

It's the xterra suits that they rent right? how is the sizing? - do they run small normal or big

I'm 5'4" 5'5"  depending on who's measuring and 125-130 lbs. I have long legs though but not so long that when I buy jeans I need the long length.

This seems to be my best bet

Trust me, the water temp will be fine.  You are in there such a short time as well.

I'm in the same boat, and wondering the same thing.

375m swim, no wetsuit. It has been mid-60's ish in the past but maybe warmer with the really mild winter.

Brandy,
Have you looked at the Pro Motion wetsuits? www.wetsuit.com IIRC 15% off as a BT member. They were very helpful when I called and discussed sizing with them.

Doing the race in waters that cold can literally suck the air out your lung.  Personally, I am not a fan of cold water and wouldn't even attempt it w/out a wetsuit.

To get an idea of just how cold it is, run a bath at that temperature and sit in it for 4 minutes (it will probably take you at least 4 minutes to get warmed-up through the act of swimming in the water).

As far as a wetsuit, remember the mantra: "Nothing new on race day."

I rented a wetsuit for my last tri of last season and it was a disaster - I wasn't used to the constriction you feel around your throat + chest nor the added float + speed (which led to problems pacing/over-exertion).  Each of these contributed to a difficult time breathing.

Add that to a difficult time breathing due to water temperature and you have some potential problems.

If you rent a wetsuit, you should consider practicing in it for a couple weeks.  It really is different - not bad, but different.  I am training for St. Anthony's and have already done three continuous swims @ race distance to get used to it.

Given that your race is but 2 some-odd weeks away, getting the wetsuit sooner rather than later is key.

Btw, I was the Orca sleeveless and love it ... I rented the Xterra full suit and, for me, found it to be difficult to move in and binding.

Edit: My local Fleet Feet rents wetsuits for $30/2 weeks - being early in the season, they might let you have it a few days early.

Swimming in 60+ degree water for sprint distance swims is very doable.
Oly distance should be ok too.
However it will be very cold getting in the water, and you will take a while to adjust.

I have swam, without wetsuit in 55 degree water for 1/2 hour or so at a time.
That was cold enough for me.

Renting a wetsuit is an interesting idea.....

I hate to be the voice of dissent but my sister got hypothermia in a race last year.  It was a mile swim and she has very little fat on her body but, personally, I would err on the side of caution and rent or buy a wet suit.

Reading this thread I started feeling better about my swim in May but I'm thinking this snow (yes snow in NYC!) is not a good thing. Wasn't it 65 last week. I got sunburn at my son's baseball game over the weekend for cripes sake!
