Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

2 x wholemeal toast and honey; orange juice; banana
familiarised myself with transition; set out kit; went and bought gloves and top because very windy
Event warmup:

minimal - jogged around near start while waiting for race briefing
Run
  • 15m 10s
  • 2.5 kms
  • 06m 04s  min/km
What would you do differently?:

walk the course beforehand (if possible); pack a wider variety of kit; plan an actual warm up
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

quick and easy to change shoes; running in bike shoes tricky and not vital; bike mount was at bottom of a small hill; tricky to get going; took off rain jacket
What would you do differently?:

always leave bike in low gear; don't panic and try to run in transition
Bike
  • 57m 44s
  • 20 kms
  • 20.79 km/hr
Comments:

probably too comfortable on bike; could cycle faster although wind was very strong; didn't utilise gears as well as I could; didn't feel confident reaching for my drink; didn't use aerobars
What would you do differently?:

have a gear strategy worked out; drink more on the go (get a camel); learn to use my aerobars
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

tried to run bike into transition and didn't really need to; racked bike fine; took some drink; took off gloves; legs were fine coming out of transition
What would you do differently?:

pretty happy with this
Run
  • 31m 54s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 23s  min/km
Comments:

flat out and back course; strange stony hill at exit from transition; stumbled when distracted by shouts from spectator; could have probably run faster for longer as I finished with spare energy
What would you do differently?:

relax into run for first km (wait until breathing settles and legs feel normal); pick up pace sooner and for longer
Post race
Warm down:

collapsed into Stu's arm through the finish line :-)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

didn't understand how much to push myself over all 3 legs; can definitely be more consistent on the bike and faster on the last run

Event comments:

great course (would have been amazing but for the wind, which at this time of year is always going to be a problem), well organised
