Swim
Comments: Couldn't have asked for a better swim. Very slight ripples in the water, smooth as silk, perfect visibility, and swimming with the current. Only downfall was the woman I was swimming next to elbowed me right in the teeth on the way out to the first buoy and kept pushing me all the way until we rounded the second buoy. I just couldn't get away from her until the swim in. What would you do differently?: I'd rather not mention what I SHOULD'VE done to her for elbowing me!!! (Just kidding...it's all part of the game) Maybe I could be under 40 again and NOT have to always start in the last wave! Transition 1
Comments: It was a long run up the beach, thru the tunnel and into the parking area to get to my bike. My legs were so slippery with Pam, the wetsuit almest fell off!! I was very out of breath during the run in, but settled in once I got on the bike. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: Did pretty well on the bike. Started out out of breath but really tried to calm it down until we were out of the park and onto the road. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 2
Comments: Had a kick @ss transition. Very few of the women were < 1:00 for transition. Since the bike in/out were in the same place, people like me whose bike was racked far from the opening had to run further with the bike. Run
Comments: I've essentially been injured since October so I haven't really been running that much. If the left foot isn't bothering me, the right knee and/or hip is. For the shape I'm in now, I'm happy with that time. Problem in the beginning of the run since the path leading out of the park was the same path for those ahead of me to return back into the park. Spectators looking at those finishing were blocking our side of the path to get out and we had to weave thru them. What would you do differently?: Not get injured. Post race
Warm down: Had a friend who isn't a runner (she started in an earlier wave than me) who I passed at about the 2-mile mark of the run who asked me to pace her in when I was done. I jogged back to where she was and ran her in, about 3/4 mile round trip. Lots of walking around after that, then after the barbecue I took the kids to the beach and we played in the waves, which had kicked up by then. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of running training, and bad knee. Event comments: Overall terrific race. Perfect swim conditions, perfect bike conditions. Only issue is that although I know they were limited on space in the park due to part of it being closed, I think having the bike in/out and run in/out areas being in the same place were not the best idea from a safety aspect. Coffee in the morning to get me going. Bob brought the kids over, but I set them up with volunteering (at the FOOD tent, of course!) Had to get to the race site early early. Parking at a premium since some of the parking areas of Spanish River Park still closed from Hurricane Wilma.
Didn't bike since it was still very dark out. Just set up my transition area and did some light jogging. I was in the last wave, so I had a 2-hour wait from the time I arrived before worrying about swim warmup. Wetsuit legal race, but the water wasn't too cold so I debated not wearing the wetsuit.
