Why is one not only highly frowned upon, but illegal, and the other is actually encouraged? It's the same concept right? Reduce your workload by using someone else's.

Just curious, that's all.

How could you possibly enforce the swim drafting?

bc drafting in the aeroposition where your hands aren't on the breaks is extremely dangerous. Don't think there is much danger in drafting in the water (save the occasional kick in the face)

If you could draft, there would be little reason to be in "the aeroposition "

I believe it has to do with the advantages. you are going to have a lot more advantage drafting on the bike than in the pool. I also like that it keeps triathlon an individual sport rather than a team sport like many bike races of become. Just my .02

If drafting were legal then I wouldn't need another bike just for tris...where would the fun be in that?

"They" say that drafting in biking means you have to exert 70% of the effort of the person leading. In swimming, the comparable number is 90%. So, if it makes you feel any better, it isn't quite as significant of an advantage in the swim.

swim drafting is a lot different then bike drafting.

Anyone with road racing experience will understand...it's kind of hard to explain.  In a draft legal race, drafting stradegy is almost as important as strength training.  A lot of work goes into who pulls when and timing breakaways.  That reduces the 'indiviuality' of the event.

I guess you could set up a pace line in the swim, but it probably would be more trouble then it is worth.

As sort of a spastic reminder of my swim days, I HATE feeling people on my heels...it triggers this insanely hard/spastic kick from me which I'm sure the rest of the pack hates. Conversely, I hate drafting off of other people. I want clear water.

So you are either off the front and crushing everyone, off course and on your own, or sitting back and waiting for the water to get clear. Two of the three aren't good strategies for doing well.

Triathlons have traditionally been about individual effort. The advantage gained from pace lining and drafting on a bike are huge. If you get me and four or five strong riders, they can comfortably everage 28 - 30 mph on a 40k course by only doing 1 minute pulls each and still come off the bike strong. It is a heck of a lot harder for a swimmer to "paceline" 1:00/100 for a mile than it is for a cyclist to paceline a 30mph ride.

Hee-hee...right???!!!

On my swim team... if a guy was behind you, and he grabbed your feet, you would get pulled under and he would swim over you.

If I am in an open water race and someone touches my feet... I start kicking really hard... and I hope they hate it. I guess they do, because they back off or go around.

If somone touches my feet in the pool I stop at the wall and let them go... but I think that has happened... like once.
