Total Time = 1h 44m 13s
Overall Rank = 140/
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 23/53
Pre-race routine:

Spent the night in the marina. Woke up and had a bowl of Total cereal. Put everything in the car and went on
Event warmup:

None which I said I was going to do one but I got to talking instead
Swim
  • 10m
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

I got a mouthful of water after the 1st buoy and it psyched me out. I cant figure out why I have problems swimming in open water. Maybe I get too excited at the beginning
What would you do differently?:

Keep head in water. quit getting psyched out when a wave hits you. Stay calm
Transition 1
  • 04m
Comments:

First time with cycling shoes so I put them on in T1. Good transition but the run in the sand (100m) was rough. I caught my breath quick and DID NOT FORGET MY HELMET THIS TIME!!!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, just get quicker
Bike
  • 53m
  • 18 miles
  • 20.38 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt fast on the bike. I passed over 30 people and got passed by 4. I was surprised as hard as I was going and still felt good. I didn't think I had a good swim so I wanted to make up for it with a good bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, keep doing what I am doing, it's working at race time
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

Don't know if this is a fast time or not. I waited until too late to take off shoes on bike, but I don't feel that it costed me that much time. Almost forgot shirt (with race number attached) but I remembered at the last minute. I did jump off a moving bike with style!
What would you do differently?:

Take off shoes before dismount
Run
  • 36m 14s
  • 4 miles
  • 09m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

I have not run that far in a while b/c of stress fracture, but I HAD NO LEG PROBLEMS!!!YAY!!! Felt better off the bike than I thought I would. They had water stations at every mile (except 2 so I ran the whole way)that I walked through. Came out kind of slow but the last mile was around 8:30. Gave it all I had at that point.
What would you do differently?:

Not be stupid and get a stress fracture. Now that it is gone, I can run some and practice which will help
Post race
Warm down:

Was pretty tired so I walked and drank water/gatorade

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough running b/c of injury

Event comments:

The extra length in the bike made it pretty tough. Felt good to finish it well after a bad swim.

Good race, sorry we didn't meet. That swim was extra tough. It was difficult swimming in the breakers. Maybe we will me up at Grandman!

Would you recommend a wet suit for this race? I have never swam in salt water before. Thanks!

Absolutely.  I did it wothout in 2008 and I wish I would have used one.  The time you lose by having to shed the wetsuit is well worth the advantage you get in gulf waters (fairly rough) at that time of the year.  I didn;t think the temp was bad, but the extra bouyancy would have been nice.
