Total Time = 1h 30m 43s
Overall Rank = 35/213
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 6/31
Pre-race routine:

I had a horrible night's sleep. Ended up on the couch around 2am, woke up at 4. Showered, packed the Jeep. Peanut butter bagel around 5, banana around 6, gatorade and water up until about 7. Set up transition once I got there, it was very wet and muddy, made the best of it. Things were really cramped too.
Event warmup:

About 50-75 meters, trying to get some water in the suit and adjust to the cold water.
Swim
  • 16m 11s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

The first 250-300 were mostly spent trying to get into a rhythm. I noticed that once I got comfortable, my arms hurt, and I had trouble with turnover. My stroke was slow because of it.
What would you do differently?:

Probably go harder. My swim is still my weak point, and I never really know how hard I can go, but this time I felt like I didn't put enough into it.
Transition 1
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

My feet were super cold and numb. Coming out of the water you have to run up this long sidewalk to transition, and pounding on that concrete didn't help. My fingers weren't working to well, super cold.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 50m 33s
  • 18 miles
  • 21.36 mile/hr
Comments:

I probably picked up more than I lost on the bike... there was a group of about 7 of us all close together about 5 miles out. I ended up falling back a little bit, and in my opinion the rest of them rode way too close to one another through the rest of the course. I'm happy with this time. I am way ahead of where I expected to be on the bike at this point in the year.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

Quick transition. I lost a shoe coming off the bike, and I stopped momentarily to go back, but a volunteer grabbed it off the course. You had to run down this muddy hill back into Transition. I had a good quick change.
What would you do differently?:

I was fumbling around with two flasks on the way out, just leave 'em next time.
Run
  • 21m 59s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

It starts with the gradual hill, which was killer for me. My feet hurt so bad at this point. It took my a good mile into the run before I felt good. The second half of the course is actually a little bit longer than the first because of the way that they set up the finish line. By two miles I was cruising and felt really strong.
What would you do differently?:

Again, I had two flasks leaving transition, dropped one, and just couldn't decide what to do with the other. Normally I just tuck it into my shorts waistband, but they weren't tied tight enough so I ended up carrying it, and I hate having something in my hand when I run. I guess make sure I tie my shorts tighter before the race starts next time. Oh, and I need to do more bike-run bricks, or at least put in a mile or so after each ride.
Post race
Warm down:

Some stretching, put on some warm clothes, dragged all of my wet muddy gear to the jeep and threw it all in the back

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I dunno. I'm not good at this part. I'll have to think about it.

Event comments:

I was disappointed with the post race. Last year there was tons off food and all kinds of it. This year they had oranges, oreos and chex mix set up near the clubouse building. Then they had some catering company that was grilling hot dogs, burgers, etc. As a participant, you could get a hot dog or red beans/rice for free, everything else had a price tag on it.

Congratulations on a great race.  I would be estatic with over 21 mph on the bike.

I was looking forward to reading this race report.  You didn't say much about the water conditions.  I see the water was 64 degrees.  That sounds pretty cold to me.  I was thinking about the doing the 1/4 but glad I skipped it after the weather yesterday.

thanks,  i need to go back and edit some things, for the record, the water was flat but cold.  really no wind, and it was kind of foggy.  buoys were big enough to see with a problem though,
