Subject: Spray Tan

I'm thinking about making an appointment to get that spray tan, mystic tan, or whatever it's called done.  I've only gotten it done once before when I went back home for a friend's wedding.  I'm not sure if all spray tans are like this, or if it's just because I got it done in a podunk town.  But...I got it done in the afternoon, and that night it got all over my pillowcases, sheets, and rubbed off on my clothes.  It eventually washed out so it wasn't that big of a deal, but in 2 days it was already faded and you could see my tan lines again.  I didn't spend any time in the pool and spent minimal time training.  My question is- do all spray tans only last about 2 days??  What has been your experience?  Do self tanners last longer than spray tans or does it all just depend on the person???

Is being tan really all that big a deal? My wife was told by her 75 year old aunt that she should get some color. C'mon! It's APRIL!!!!!! Unless I am working outside, I don't much care. Next thing she's gonna be asking us if the dress makes her thigh / butt / stomach / ankles look big.

Ooh- that's not good.  I'd the "orange girl with an afro"!!  If I looked like that the race officials might yank me off the course and force me to the first aid tent.  I have seen some people that have done it and look "orangish" and others have looked really good.  I'm so pale that I need some color and don't want to layout in the sun.  But I also don't want to waste my time getting a spray tan and then just have it fade within a day or 2 and get all over my clothes and stuff! Hmmm...

Yeah...you're getting ready to spend 4 days in the Florida sun, so save your money for a HRM.

Right, Brett?

What about sunblock? Bullfrog or something along those lines. Besides, is a spray-on tan REALLY going to prevent you from getting sunburned?

Spray tan is only for vanity purposes- it doesn't protect you from getting burned.  That's what sunnblock is for.

I don't think she wants it for SPF, but for vanity purposes....

I'm pretty much just asking who has tried self tanners or spray tanners and your experience with them- how long they lasted, which is better, etc.

Again, it's April. Who cares? Never understood the whole "tanning" thing. I get bored easily.

Its almost summer, you'll be training outside. Sunscreen still gets you a tan.

Yes, you're leaving for FL this week, you'll tan there.

I never go get a fake tan unless I have a formal event to go to where I have to wear a backless/strapless dress, then I don't care if it fades after 3 days becasue it was just for that event.

So I take it you can't offer me any recommendations/knowledge regarding self tanners and spray tans??

My wife has used some different brands.  She had to watch out because some of them made her break out.  In general she had to stick with the name brand stuff but even then it was a crap shoot.

Try one see if you break out or turn orange.  If so, don't try that one again.

But like scout7, I don't really care about tans.  Give me a pasty white girl with a good attitude anytime over a tan chick with a bad tude.

Not worth it. Go ride your bike in your sports bra! That'll work!

I agree. If you're going there for a race, do you really want to have to worry about stuff rubbing off, or possibly causing a reaction? Take it from Haley, she knows all about nasty rashes.

Yeah, but Penicillin won't cure spray tan rashes...

Pay the money to have it done "right" and it looks good. I have gone to a salon and was "airbrushed" by the technician. The brand of bronzer she used is called "Bronzi" and it works really well. I have done it several times and usually go in the evening (be sure to exfoliate before you go. That's VERY important in making the "tan" last). You leave it on over night and when you shower in the morning, the "marker" washes off, but the "tan" is still there. Again, if it is done by a trained technician, it looks really good and can last up to a week. They will usually tell you to avoid certain lotions and creams that contain chemicals that will cause fading more quickly. For example, I remember them telling me not to use Dove soap for some reason. And some face/acne creams will cause fading, as well. But if you ask, they should provide you with a list of what you should and should not use. You should also moisturize a lot after you have it on, and that will help it to last longer, as well.

But after that first shower, (the morning after the application), I've never had trouble with it rubbing off on clothing or sheets or anything.

THis is a ridiculous conversation.....pay to get a spray tan so you look tan. Put on sunscreen so you don't get too much sun. I'm confused. It's so hard to be a woman in a capitalist country. Just get yer tan in Fla, Janelle....everone will be looking at your head anyway....fuzzy girl.

If I wanted to get a real tan I could lay out in my  backyard in the scorching 90 degree heat.  But I prefer to avoid laying out to protect my skin- which is why I would rather get a spray tan to look tan, than to get a real tan.  It's just my personal preference and I don't see why anyone thinks it's silly.  Some people prefer to not bake in the sun and I am one of those   I'm just wanting to know if anyone has tried spray tanners/self tanners and what they thought, not "should I or should I not use them?"
