I'm seeing gulf water temperatures all over the thermometer range--80 to 85 degrees.  I know the bay will be cooler and both of those can't be accurate.  Sure it's a race day call and you won't know for sure 'til you get there, but the (real) temp today would be a pretty good predictor.  Anyone got a good site for the temp at the pier?

Enjoy St. Anthonys.  I'm just not up for that length of a race yet.  But, I'll be there watching.

I did the Escape from Ft. Desoto and they recorded water temp as 83?

Now, I have a beginners question.......When the race directors say wetsuits are not "Legal" with water temps over 85.  The rules then go on to say for those racers expecting to get an award>.  Does that mean you can wear a wetsuit anyway it water temp is over 85 and you won't finish in the top 5? ?

No...under no circumstances can any athlete in a USAT-sactioned race wear a wetsuit if the temp is over 84 degrees. It's a safety thing: wearing a wetsuit in water that warm would easily cause hyperthermia.

This is why BT is sooo great.  Thanks for the info.  I guess the full suit goes into the closet untill Fall.

Bring the suit if you like to swim in it.  There is still a possibility that the water will be cool enough to wear it as the USAT officials will take the temperature + make an announcement on race day.

If there is a way to safely allow wetsuits, they will as many folks find them to be neoprene safty blankets.

Jim:

If the temperature is above 78* but below 84*, would those using wetsuit be grouped together in a final 'outlaw' wave or would they still start with their AG?

The RD, at his discretion, can do this. Reading the SA forum, it sounds likely that he won't, so no one will be able to wear their suits.

HOWEVER...the TNT wave in an interesting case. They are the last two waves, and are unscored, so it's possible they may allow folks starting in the TNT waves to wear them. Could cause an uproar among the non-TNTers. My advice: don't miss the "mandatory" pre-race meeting. I'm sure it will be discussed there.

Weather.com has bay temp at 75 degrees. If this is accurate then I predict a wetsuit legal race. I was wondering if USAT water temps were based on surface temp or at some determined depth? Any body know how they measure the temp?

Just think gulla- if it's not wetsuit legal, you won't have to worry about putting it on backwards

4.6 Measuring Water Temperature.

It is recommended, but not required that the water temperature for a race be finally determined by a measurement made within 2 hours of the race start. Measurements should be made in at least three locations on the swim course, spaced so as to divide the entire swim course into approximately equidistant segments, and measured at a depth of 18 inches below the surface of the water, at points where direct sunlight can strike the water. The water temperature for the race should be determined by averaging the three temperature measurements taken. A water temperature measurement should also be taken prior to any pre-race meetings in order to forecast to the athletes as early as possible the likely water temperature on race day and the likelihood of whether wet suits will be allowed on race day.

All I can say is it was 98 degrees here in the greater Tampa area yesterday.  I'll be shocked if it is wetsuit legal.  The bay where the swim is held however is dredged for large boats so if they sink the thermometer is a deep spot you never know.  Pray for rain and an artic blast from the north

the local old timers are saying they only remember ONCE when St A's was not wetsuit legal.   so odds may be in our favor.

Hey Lucy...if it's not wetsuit legal, are you gonna wear that yellow bikini?

I am actually working on the st. pete side right now and I'm on the bay. Went down during lunch and stuck my toe in. Feels pretty darn warm. If they were going strictly by surface water temp at the site I do not think it would be legal. Unfortunatly the NOAA buoy went out two weeks ago.
If I were you I wouldn't rely on having a wetsuit to swim in there.
