Subject: Bike Gear question.....
Being new to triathlon, I feel that I've picked up swimming and running pretty well, but the bike is giving me trouble, I have a Trek 1000, nothing great, but I've seen people with heavier bikes do just fine. My question is what gear do most people do their "normal" riding (average speed) in, the big ring, medium, or small, thanks in advance!

What gear you're in, especially what chainring you're on, is mostly irrelevant. What matters is finding an efficient cadence (85-95 for most people), then finding the proper gear ratio that will result in the appropriate heartrate for whatever workout you're doing.

A lot of people can find that proper gear ratio for "normal" riding on either chainring.

Yes, and yes!

And (most likely) you will get a higher average MPH as a result.
