Pre-race routine:

Got up. Ate a banana and power bar with some gatorade. Got things together and drove through fog to the race. Would have gone to bed earlier, but a member of my church was hit by a train and I spent the evening at the hospital.
Event warmup:

I did very little warmup. Not very motivated. Set up my transition area. Mingled. Rode my bike down the path and back. Did a few laps in the pool. Not even feeling nervous until the race began. It was delayed 15 minutes because of the fog.
Swim
  • 09m 37s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 24s / 100 yards
Comments:

Thought I would create a nice steady pace. After first lap, I caught a swimmer. Had trouble passing her. Rather large lady. Because they mistakenly had me in the duathlon instead of the tri, I had to start at the back. I had to pass all sorts of people and that made for a difficult swim.
What would you do differently?:

Before the race day came, I would double check that I was registered correctly if possible. I would push it a little bit more as well. (I did freestyle it the whole way, which was good.)
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Had trouble with my underarmor (Walmart brand) and some other difficulties with transition. Put shoes on feet instead of doing it on the bike. I like doing it on the bike better.
What would you do differently?:

Leave shoes on bike and put feet into shoes after getting onto bike. Try something different with shirt. Not have so much junk in my transition area.
Bike
  • 45m 3s
  • 15 miles
  • 19.98 mile/hr
Comments:

Most difficult part of the race with the most problems. I assume that the fog caused condensation and therefore, my gear shifting problem. That was very frustrating. Then I had my handlebars too loose. Couldn't pump standing up and that cost me a lot. Bumps caused me to more forward with the bars and I just couldn't get it going very well.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure bike is ready to race. I took it to the shop for a tune-up but I should check everything too.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Feeling frustrated didn't help. Got a drink and hit the run course. Very little problems.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 00m
  • 3.11 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

Calves were spasming bad. Stopped to stretch. Didn't help. Still not pumped up so took the run at moderate pace. Passed several people but didn't feel like I ran it very well.
What would you do differently?:

Try harder!
Post race
Warm down:

Not much. Ate and drank. Hung out with other racers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of motivation and machinery problems. Hard to compete after visiting a person who had just gotten hit by a train.
