Hi everyone,

Just wanted to post that I attempted my first swim since being hit by a car this past January.  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=33960&posts=11#s

I still can't get my arm all the way over.  No zipper drills or shark fin drills.  Bummer. Hurts like hell, but I will push through, using some common sense of course.  I was able to complete a  few 25 yard lengths.  Sometimes I had to stop in the middle and switch to breast stroke.   The shoulder was throbbing the rest of the night, but I feel like I made some improvement on the range of motion.  I have my first sprint tri this July, I hope to be able to freestyle  the distance by then, but hey, if I have to float on my back and kick my way to T1, I WILL!

Thanks for listening.  I just feel great about this milestone.  Any others out there recovering from shoulder injury?  I'd like to know how you were able to regain full motion again.

Yay! Welcome back and so glad that you're rehabbed to the point of getting back in the water!

that's great news!  I'm sure we are all glad to hear you are on the road to recovery.  I'm sure you'll be ready for July if you are already swimming now.

fellow shoulder injuree here. had an athroscopy and bankart feb 28 last year (the day after the oscars....long story). still get randomly sore shoulders every now and then but sucking up about 4k a week swimming with drills and the lot.

so chuffed you are back in the pool - i know what its liek to be a land lubber for a while - it sucks! advise from me is patience, kicking, patience, kicking etc...

with kick sets do some timed kicks, use a board and don't use a board, use a fins and don't use fins and if it gets really bad do some one armed strokes but don't overdo it and don't tell your doctor/physio etc

I'm rehabbing from a 3rd degree separation. It sounds like my injury wasn't near as bad as yours. I was out for 3 weeks, and now I'm swimming. I have healed remarkably quick. I think that the most important thing for me has been to start doing very minimal resistance training. Someone from BT recommended that I strengthen my rotator cuff, so I have been researching rotator cuff exercises, and it has helped me quite a bit. Good luck on the recovery!

Yes, I have some isolated rotator cuff resistance 'dry land' training stuff that I need to perform to gain strength back.  It was my "greater tuberosity" (doesn't that sound funny) that was broken.  So rotator cuff problems will exists.  I will keep at it.  Thanks for the well wishes.

Hey that's wonderful! Congratulations! I very much admire your determination to make it through the swim in July.

I actually just got back from PT for my shoulder, and it turns out it's not nearly as bad as my doc thought. I have a TON of exercises to do daily - but she said I can start swimming right away. (Though, she said I have to start with 100 meters, and increase workouts by no more than 100 meters a time and no increase if there's pain.)

I have a big list of rotator cuff exercises, if you want me to share. My PT also said to strengthen the scapula and tricep, so I have a few to do for that, too - but not to strengthen the deltoid any more, because it's already over-developed.

I'm on the shoulder injured list as well. I took an old lady fall about 2 1/2-3 months ago. Went to a chiropractor, but now started PT. I'm just hoping (and scared) that this isn't permanent.
