Overall Rank = /
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Ate half a bagel and cliff bar and drank a redbull and a V8 juice small can
Event warmup:

walked a mile to the start
Swim
  • 1h 31m 6s
  • 4156 yards
  • 02m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

I normally a good ocean swim and have practice many times and did 1H10min easy but the MASS start and getting hit and trying to find openings to swim was crazy. I never got into my normal stroke because I was protecting my face from getting kicked. I decieded the second lap to take it easy and make it fun and just finish the swim and move onto the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Start infront and let everyone else worry about getting around me than me worry about getting around them
Transition 1
  • 17m 18s
Comments:

When I got in it was crazy everyone trying to find a spot to sit and change and I sat down to change and I just could not get my stuff on and I had really bad armpit rash from the swim and was trying to fix that before I did 112 miles on the bike so I took my time.
What would you do differently?:

have less stuff in my bag to worry about and leave some stuff on the bike(arm warmers and jacket)
Bike
  • 7h 38m 2s
  • 112 miles
  • 14.67 mile/hr
Comments:

One thing I HATE is head wind and I do not mind it for a few miles but for more than 56 miles was crazy. I was fighting a smal chest infection which made the bike not so pleseant. All I wanted to do is not over do the bike and feel comfortable because the bike course it is constant pedaling no real breaks. As this was my first IM I want to be safe than sorry. I never felt like giving up and at mile 80 I was super excited because we where done with the rollers and tailwind all the way home. Well when we had 12 miles left on the beach front I thought YES under 7hurs but MAN OH MAN 25mph wind gusts for 12 miles was crazy. I passed 20 people who where struggeling. I am glad I enough energy to bring it home
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Now that I know I am mentally tough to push through 112 miles on a bike and still feel good for the run I am met my goal.
Transition 2
  • 13m 55s
Comments:

I got off the bike and my feet where wet and my arches where sore but I felt great. My arm pit where raw and buring my the swim and that was the only thing bothering me so far.
Run
  • 7h 10m 17s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 16m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

I started to run up to the 3 mile mark but I could not breath right and started to feel bad and coughing and hacking up flem(my chest cold was getting worse). So I kept walking moving forward at 15m:35 pace. I ran walked for a while and round the park. Around mile maker 11 i felt blisters forming in both my shoes and I knew this was not good cause I had 15.3 miles still to do. I went around the turn around for the second lap and the blisters felt like they where growing bigger and spreading across on the bottom of both my feet. I kept walking and saw friends pass me by on there way to the finish and I was walking slower and slower as my feet hurt really bad. I got to the park and I felt I was alone and no one behind me and I thought I was the last person when an ironman offical stopped his car and got out and walked with me and asked me how I was doing. I asked for a ride to mile maker 12 and he said NO and I had time to finish just keep moving forward. I never stop once the whole 26.2 miles. Well I am walking(shuffeling)towards mile marker 22 and my garmin is showing I will not make the mid-night cutoff at the pace I was going at and righ there my mind went to dark places of quiting and DNF`ing. I hit mile marker 22 and a guy and gal where running and walking and said we going to make it and I said we not with this pace because they would run and then walk and then stop and I would just walk by them. A guy on the run course said you all need to be doing 12min30sec miles to finish and I was doing 16m17sec at the time. The guy who was running and walking and stopping started to cry because he culd not move any faster. My feet where killing me and i could feel my blisters popping. I looked down and saw in my left shoe blood coming out and that when it hit me, I am not dieing I am not crying and only 4 miles left to become and IRONMAN and I did not come all this way to dissapoint myself and supporters and the effort I put in to lose 40 pounds in 2 months to not finish. So at mile maker 22 I took a deep breath and started running hard and did mile 23 in 9m50sec and then ran 10m50`s for the rest till I got to Kath_G at 1/2 mile to the finish. We said hi and she was looking good and moving forward but the more I walked the pain in my feet grew so I ran walked the last .25 miles and waited just before the purple arch so I could have the finishing shoot to myself. I ran in and I had 10 min to spare. I jumped up in the air and slapped the timing board arch as my finishing photo. I am an IRONMAN
Post race
Warm down:

sat down and ate a slice of pizza and drank sprite and watched the midnigh finishers come in. Got a free Tshirt and a bunch of drunk folks coming by me scream YOU RE A F%$@King arm man dude which made me feel really good.

I rode my bike back to shores of panama and met another drunk guy in the elevator with my friends Alan and Scottie who finished the race many hurs before me and he was you guys are F&^$King ironman and alot of fist bumps.

I got into our room and took my shoes off and had one MAJOR bloody sock and i was still on a high to feel the pain.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Chest infection and blistered feet

Congratulations Ironman!

To do the math and realize you need to pick up the pace a lot to finish despite all you had going on, and do that is quite impressive.

Glad I saw you out there on the bike a few times and again just before the finish.

Hope your blisters are feeling better. Dr. Candy Socks did help me with my big heel one.

Enjoy this post IM bliss...as you have accomplished a lot.
