Subject: Good double duty tire: trainer and road training

I'm looking to get a powertap wheel but would like to use it on both my trainer and outdoor training (and can only afford one). I don't want to have to remove/remount trainer and road tires.

What's a good tire for the job, i.e. that can be used both on the road or on my trainer? Also, any problems with using a road tire on the trainer? I will wipe it down to remove any dirt/rocks/sand/etc so as not to damage the roller on my trainer.

Thanks.

The problem isn't any damage to the trainer cylinder, it's to the tire from the heat.

I've heard Gatorskins tend to do well on trainers but they'll still wear out faster than if you use them on the road exclusively.

Another thing you could consider is the Kurt Kinetic computer on a Kinetic trainer. It does watts. They might not be exactly on with your power tap's watts but you would have consistency with trainer power vs trainer power and outdoor power vs outdoor power.

I have a PT as well and just use a Gatorskin tire. I go from road to trainer and back again with no issues whatsoever.

x3 - also I haven't flatted in 1500+ miles, except for one rim tape issue.

I've never had issue using road tires on my trainer.  It may cause a bit of uneven wear between the front and back tire, but I've never had any real issues.

I originally just purchased the cheapest tire I could find.  It was tire that was marked down to $9 on Nashbar/Perform.  This worked well for me.

I then purchased a CT and actually purchased a specific training tire.  With the CT you have resistance on the tire to simulate hills that are 10%+ grade.

If you are going to use a trainer with minimal resistance, say less than simulating a 5% grade, then I would just purchase a cheap tire and not worry about it.  I would then switch the tire out when racing.

I'm going on my 2nd season on the trainer with a Gatorskin, plus the tire has about 1500 road miles.  Yeah, it's getting tired but it's held up very good.

I have used Maxxis ReFuse. Not a true race tire by any means but more than sufficient IMO. Also use it on trainer and usually get one race/train cycle out of them. About a full year and close to 2500miles with very little to no flats.

I have also used the Gatorskins and honestly both work well and I just get which ever is cheaper at the time
