Subject: Kemah Triathlon. Official Thread
????Thought I would get the ball rolling here...I was told calling it the "Official Thread" would get more replies. LOL.  The website for Kemah (www.KemahTri.com) says there is a registration kickoff this Saturday at Houston Cycling Center's Spring Valley location, anybody know where that is?  Anyone doing this race?  I have never done it, but have heard some awesome things about it.  I had some friends do it last year and I was so jealous....jumping off a huge boat to start??  How cool is that!

It's my favorite olympic distance triathlon.  I have done it each year (2010 and 2011) but will sadly miss it this year as I'm doing the Texas 70.3 and NOLA 70.3 (the week before) right before it.

The swim is a lot of fun.  There's definitely something cool about being taken nearly a mile offshore and jumping off a boat and swimming back.

The bike course will be different this year, so that's version #3 of the bike course.  It will be flat and expect some wind but it's not nearly as windy as Galveston.

The run course (if the same as last year) is kind of brutal as you run over each side of the Kemah Bridge in the last couple miles of the run.  Make sure to save some energy for that.

Haha... GMAN... That's why I put the bridge in there, punishment lol.

The swim is obviously the same this year. The bike is always a challenge as the police (outside of Kemah) are always demanding we change something. I really want to fight to keep the course the same as last year. We'll see, I should know by the first of the year or sooner. The run will use the boardwalk again and the bridge in the last couple miles. Instead of going south in Kemah we'll add back in Clear Lake Shores loop (beautiful), like the first year, since the constructions is over. All corse maps except for the bike are updated on the site. Don't' forget we have the kids tri and the 5k this year on Saturday. Thanks!

I look forward to Kemah this year as well.  Aaron promised a 30% decrease in time with his kit on, so I will vastly improve my 2:19 this year!  and with one kid out of day care I will race Alcatraz when I qualify again!!  lol

I am in. I will be doing the Sprint since it will be my first salt water swim. Want to make sure I survive before I move up to the Olympic. Looking forward to it.

If you go to the race in the Races section you can create a thread for it that is will be called the "Official" thread.

However, I can't find the 2012 race on the races section here.

Aaron is it still going to be called "Gateway to the Bay"?

Kemah was my first, and I owe it some payback.

I'm tempted to do the sprint because 1) I did it as my first last year and was pretty much dead last.  2) I am doing a HIM 3 weeks prior.

But I really want to jump off a boat.  So I'll probably sign up for the Oly.

I'll do the full TX3, though I'll probably just register for them one at a time.  Just in case I end up not being able to do the other 2 for some reason.

Jump off the boat.  You know you want to.  Just say screw it.  I'm doing Galveston, the MS 150, and the Oly at Kemah.  DO IT!!!!!

I just might.  LOL.

But I'd only do the MS150 if someone sponsored it.  I can suffer through 3 events falling across the Kemah finish line exausted.

But I can't handle fund raising.

The boat start was very fun. Definitely a lot more camaraderie, encouragement, and excitement for each wave.

It would be nice to have water supplied on the boat although many people just used the water from the bar.

ETA: Not really complaining, just commenting. The swim felt long and the run felt short.

The water on the boat was something we had planned but for whatever reason the boat denied it last minute. We already have it approved for next year. The swim was long. The boat was supposed to idle to stay in position but the coast guard made them shut their engines completely off making them drift off course. This year that will be fixed as well. The run was spot on. Remember that we take tangents when we create it but if anything that would make it long so I'm not sure why you had it short. Hmm. I promise it was 6.2, we measured half a million times : ) lol hahaha. However, it's nice to hear the comments, it just makes our resolve for 2012 that much stronger. Thanks everyone!

Aaron, if we sign up for the sprint, but change our minds and want to try the Olympic can we do this? Jumping off a boat sounds fun. But swimming right now is not my strong suit. But i am working on it.

I did miss the Clear Lake Shores part of the run last year.  I liked that section the first year.  The bridge definitely adds some character to the run though.

Ugh.  Guess I'll have to do a few hills in training.  I guess it will help with the 2 foot bridge on the Galveston course.

goose1126 - 2011-11-18 6:37 AM How far is the swim in the Oly at Kemah?

All Oly distances are standard - 1500m swim, 40k bike, 10k run.

Unless the boat drifts again and the swim will be about 1650m. Wink
