dress appropriately and in layers. toe covers are amazing and keep the feet warm. as long as its not snowing ill ride, i put on under armour, a jacket if its real cold and gloves if its under 50 or so. the key as i keep saying is wearing layers and also when you start make sure youre a bit chilly standing still since you will warm up!

+1 I'll take 30's and sunny over 40's and damp anytime.

As we say in the south, regarding summer time, 'it's not the heat, it's the humidity'.  The same is true in winter.  A wet cold really sucks the heat out of you, 'bone chillin' cold.

My record is 26F, but it was sunny and very dry.  We southerners were fascinated dealing with icing up water bottles.  I wear snow skiing gloves and balaclava below 35.  When you need to wear a balaclava, you really need one.

The wind chill from riding 20+ mph really bites when it's below 40.

Cold, damp, or dark - I'll ride any 2 of the 3.  All three and it's not fun.

I fully admit to being a wimp when it comes to being cold. Or wet.  Cold and wet = definitely not going out!

I've already got the trainer tire on and have done quite a few trainer rides (currently catching up on the Walking Dead and Game of Thrones series on TV).  Throw into the mix the crazy London drivers and there's no way in h3ll that I'm heading outside to ride!

When there is just to much ice on the roads. Not safe. Or your chain freezes.Laughing

I used to commute year round and -10 was about all I could handle. But there is a big difference getting somewhere and training.

I dressed well, but it was only a matter of time before the real cold broke through. I would take my shell off and all my sweat was froze to the inside. Also the cold isn't the problem on the bike... circulation is. Your hands and feet will start to freeze first due to poor circulation. You need to make sure your feet and hand protection is wind proof and LOOSE. Tight stuff makes it worse.

That is below 30 to zero... below zero is pointless... you have to have a face protector and then you can't breath no matter what you use. I have used them all and your breath freezes and clogs them, or they fog up your eye protection which to me is a must.

Now down to freezing I can still dress pretty light with just a base and a shell and be fine. Does not take much and that is about all I'm willing to do these days. Base, wind proof tights, shell and light gloves and a wind proof cap. If I have to wear more than that it is not worth it.
