Total Time = 1h 18m 53s
Overall Rank = 136/627
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 18/71
Pre-race routine:

Up by 4:30, ate banana, 1/2 peanut butter sandwich and water
Event warmup:

None, just walked 1/2 mile on sand to swim start
Swim
  • 14m 12s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Actually did alright going out pretty hard and drafting... The swim is my weakest event so I needed to draft to have a decent time....this actually worked out well as I was able to draft for about 1/4 to 1/3 of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Draft a bit more, especially at the end...last 250m I was not drafting and I know that I slowed up.
Transition 1
  • 04m 20s
Comments:

long, steep run from swim exit to bike! Very difficult run up the hill...I mean WALK up the hill, which is what I did.
What would you do differently?:

Next year I will practice going up this hill a few times as I think I could have shaved a minute without hurting myself with a slow jog up.
Bike
  • 39m 33s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.20 mile/hr
Comments:

This being my first tri, and first time "racing" on a bike, I really didn't know what to expect. The rolling hills were challenging for me. After driving up and down PCH for the past 25 years, I never really realized how "rolling" they are! I don't think I pushed hard enough on the bike, was way too willing to ease up...I was passed a number of times, but did more passing than I was passed.
What would you do differently?:

Would have ridden this course a few times...heck I live a few miles away, no excuses to have not done this. I should have pushed harder and looked to "pick people off" in front of me like I used to as a runner.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

Good transition here...I felt pretty clean dismounting, running to rack my bike and did a quick shoe switch.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 19m 40s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Took a 1/2 mile or so to "get my legs"...then felt pretty good. While I don't know my splits, I know that I went negative splits all the way. I felt great at the end, was not passed at all, but did lots of passing. I think I actually had too much still in me...should have pushed harder on the bike!
What would you do differently?:

nothing on the run...push harder on the bike!
Post race
Warm down:

walked around with my wonderful and supportive wife. Got a nice, free 15 minute massage!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bike...too conservative.

Event comments:

Great race...well organized. I'll do this one again next year!
