Picked one up this weekend to give to the wife for Christmas. Since it won't be opened for another month, I ain't got much for you other than to say the box is nice.

Hope that helps!!

I have one. I've read all the reviews, and in some cases...they have a point, but in others...I'm not seeing what they saw.

My feedback thus far: I've had zero problems with the web browser. In fact, it's much better than my laptop. I surfed for several hours and did some shopping and such (non-amazon) this weekend, and had no issues.

I have only downloaded one game (Fruit Ninja), but it's quite nice.

I did download the Netflix app, but the video playback quality of items in my queue has varied wildly. I've heard this form some other folks, so I don't know if it's a Netflix thing or what. Video and stuff from amazon is fine.  You CAN'T go to netflix.com or Hulu.com and watch video there directly, though (which is the workaround I thought I'd use).

Getting stuff to and from the cloud is pretty easy (although all I have is books and a few apps).

I did a couple hours of reading on it...it's baout like reading on a big version of my phone. certainly not my preference, but will do in a pinch.

I was set to be disappointed, based on some of the reviews, but I really haven't been. In fact, I've been quite pleased. I think, though, is know what you're getting. It's NOT an ipad. It is also not a Kindle e-reader.

It's a tablet that is primarily for media consumption and web browsing. And it expects you to keep a lot of stuff in the cloud.  I bought it so I could have a smaller cpu to carry around the house for the internet, and to have something that I could read on/play games/dink around with when I am killing time. It works great for both those purposes.

It is NOT my primary e-reader. I have regular kindles for that.

Mine will be here today. Will let you know. Disappointed to hear of problems with the netflix app as I foresee that as one of my biggest uses for the fire.

I have pretty similar thoughts to mmrocker.

I will also add that I do a lot of PDF reading (mainly two-columned scientific papers). The Kindle coverter feature is USELESS, but reading native PDFs is fine.

I was prepared to be really disappointed with it and end up exchanging it for an iPad after the reviews, but I am honestly very happy with it. I like the size better than an iPad and it's a lot easier to carry around in my purse or bag.

Anyone planning to root their Fire and install a new ROM?

I love the size and most of the specs for the Fire, but would want more of an AOSP experience on it. I use my Android phone around the house way more than I do any of computers these days.

I don't really ebook, so looking for a killer web device and email device. A $200 7" Android tablet looks very tempting.

My wife wanted one for multiple purposes but needed the web browser to be good for something she needs to do for work.

Went to Best Buy and they unboxed one since everyone was asking for a model to play with that didn't have the pre-loaded experience that Kindle has.

The web browser was not good. A well trafficked public site wouldn't pull info up she needed and it was very slow.

Very disappointed because she really wanted it and now we have to spend $300 more on the iPad.

That might be more of a function of their wi-fi/signal strength then the browser.  I have been using it for browsing and have not had any problems with any major website.

I played with all of the Kindle demo units (K Keyboard, K4 touch, K4 nontouch, and Fire) at Best Buy and Target. I found that performance in virtually all respects is pretty bad--including browser (which didn't want to open anything one of the times I tried it).

In "real life", however, I have had zero performance issues with any of mine. No lags, no poor displays, no failures to load pages.

If it really is the right device for you, and that was your hang up...I would either A) see if you can play with someone's in a regular setting or B) buy one from Amazon and if you don't like it, return it.

All great info, thanks folks!

One more question, when I buy the kindle fire, will it automatically transfer all of my kindle books to it when I connect to my Amazon account? (From my current kindle), or can I use both of them independently ?

Your content for device 1 is in two places--on the Kindle (local) and in The Cloud/on your Kindle account.

When you start up device 2, there will be zero local content, but it will all still be on your account/in the cloud.

Just like if you had the app on yoru phone, a K Keyboard, and a PC version...you'd need to download it to each device you want to read it on, but once you've done that, you can sync amongst them.

That hasn't been my experience with the web browser at all. It does a good job of browsing the web as long as it has at least 2 bars of signal strength. My guess is that it was the way Best Buy had their demo unit set up.

Nope - Best Buy opened a new unit because everyone was asking to try a real one. Also we tested the browser on the same wi-fi that the iPad, iPhone, and other tablets at the store were all on and the Fire was by far the worst. It also wouldn't open some website windows that all the other browsers allowed.

I am not a iPad fanboy and was truly wanting the Fire to be a good option - I have to say in my opinion it wasn't even close.

Huh. That's weird. I've had zero issues with my browser at all. In fact, it's substantially better than my laptop at home. No issues at work, either, where the wifi signal is notoriously sketchy. My co-worker just got his fire this weekend as well, and he's not having any issues with performance, either (well, at least not with his Kindle...don't know about elsewhere :p).

If you have time, go try it again.  every review I've read said the web browsing was fine.  Even if it's a little slower, it's worth saving $400.00 if that's what you are primarily using it for..  Ordering mine today..

Had my Fire for a couple of days now and couldn't be happier with it. Browser works just fine, as does netflix app, as long as you have a decent wifi connection. Disappointed that I couldn't watch netflix at the gym but attribute that to the connection there. Also works great as an ebook reader, I'm about halfway through my first free ebook (Water for Elephants) from Amazon's lending library.

For the most part it's doing everything i expected it to be able to do in fine fashion.

That's consistent with my experience, too. I would say it's comparable to my laptop at home and it works better than my laptop at work.
