Uhhh, I've never run a 10k before, and my first one is on Thanksgiving Day.  And it's gonna rain.  I've never run in the rain before (I'm very new to all of this stuff).  Anything weird I need to think about for the run?  I got some gloves and ear warmers. My feet and socks are going to get soaked, aren't they?  I'm scared to wear too many layers because I tend to warm up fairly quickly.  Should I wear a hat?  A windbreaker?  Any tips at all?

You might want to apply some Body Glide to your heels, the bottom of your toes and balls of your feet. I have found that I am more likely to get blisters with sopping wet feet. Socks and shoes expanding with the wetness rubbing against your feet and such. You may want to apply to skin under the band of the front of your sport, and under the edge of the top part (over the girls) too, just in case. Same issue with the rubbing. I've had chafing there that hurt enough for me to give up any secrets I may be keeping.

Good luck and have fun!!

I thought it was gonna rain during one of my long runs one weekend so this is what I've gathered for running in the rain:

  • Apply BodyGlide in all areas you suspect you'd chafe and then apply some more in the same areas.
  • Clothing that will not absorb too much water would be good like polyester.  Windbreakers might suffice.  But don't wear too many layers.  I wore shorts, shirt, water resistant jacket.
  • A poncho might work out nicely too, and wear it before the race starts.  Take it off when you get too hot after race start.
  • A polyester cap to keep the rain out of your face and eyes.
  • You have the gloves covered already.
  • Dry clothes to change after the race.

I may have missed other good tips but I'm sure our BT veteran runners will chime in soon.  Good luck! =)

I always prefer a non - precipitation day but unfortunately this will probably will not be the first or last time if you are going to be doing this as part of your lifestyle. So it sucks but be happy you will only be racing for an hour or so .Depending on air temp I would wear a hat , just a long sleeve top either dri fit or with a little compression material, optional light windbreaker-like jacket usual shorts and socks I would just wear what you typically wear because IMOP heavy wet socks are worse than just being a little cold plus I do not think you will be cold except for waiting for the start. Have some water proof jacket and pants that you can quickly take off just before the start. If its below 45 maybe light gloves. The point is you will get wet and the least amount of clothes you can wear and be reasonably comfortable the better. Good luck

If it does rain, embrace it! Some of the fondness race memories I have took place in abysmal conditions.

You haven't trained in the rain yet? It's part of the fun. Yes, it's always much better to race on cool dry days. But the reality is you can't control the weather. As others said, Body Glide or the equivalent, dry-wicking clothing, don't overdress, and remember, the faster you run the quicker you get done. Don't wear a cotton sweatshirt or sweatpants, they will act like a sponge.

For whatever reason it ALWAYS rains here on Thanksgiving morning for the Turkey Trot, then turns nice once we are done. Once you're moving you won't even care, you'll be surrounded by other wet runners. Misery loves company. And you'll have something to talk about over dinner!

Don't worry -- unless it's torrential, you should be just fine. Follow some of the suggestions here on clothing, and then just lap it up. Many of my best races over the years have been in the rain. Soaking feet/shoes are the thing to avoid. I find that my feet generally don't get too wet from the rain itself; I just need to avoid stepping in big puddles.

Good luck.

Not a problem. Big black trash bags are your friend, They make a perfect poncho.    Pack dry cloths for after the run.

My first half-marathon was in the rain. Well, in a tropical storm.  (Google: Lewis & Clark Marathon 2008 / I ran with Ike)  The rain has not bothered me since.

Above all have fun.

And remember no matter how miserable you may feel running the rain. The volunteers are out there standing in it. Be sure and thank them as you pass by.

Once that gun goes off the adrenaline kicks in. Try not to think about it. Just have fun, and race!

Wear a hat, and possibly some lightly-tinted sunglasses to help keep rain out of your eyes.

Dress a little warmer than you would for a normal training session in dry weather; that water can suck the heat from you.

Bring a change of clothes, especially if you're going to end up standing around afterward or have a bit of a drive to get home. Being cold and wet sucks the most (in my opinion at least).

A windbreaker may be nice if it is water repellent, but if you're out there for more than about 30-45 minutes (or less if it is raining hard), then it's not going to do a whole lot for you.

I love running in the rain!    Time to stop fussing about it,  HTFU and go and have fun!

Just remember to pack (at least) dry socks and shoes.

More importantly, what's the temp. forecast to be?

you will be fine, the rain wont hurt you unless your made of sugar and then..... lol. But in all seriousness, pack dry clothes fo after the race, wear a running jacket or something that will keep you a little dry and go have fun with it. I bet you will be surprised as to how much fun you will have once you start the race, you probably wont even notice the rain. Good luck on your first 10k.

Everyone has already given some good advice. You could probably get some better advice if you let us know what is the expected temp along with rain. This is what matters to me. I went ut this morning in about 45F and light rain. Had long sleeve under armor and a Gore jacket (sleeveless). No hat for me as rain feels good on my head at this temp. Also, no one mentioned it but to keep feet dry you put some plastic bags on over your socks and a rubber band or something fairly tight without constricting around your ankles to keep water out. Your shoe will get wet but not your feet. I would recommend trying this first before your race....even if it is ot raining.

No matter what kind of advice you get, you're about to get the best kind......your own experience.

Go have fun!

It's just rain.

(it's supposed to be clear, sunny, and 45 degrees for our 10K Tongue out   )

If it's going to be cold....merino wool socks! They stay warm even when wet.

Get a big trash bag. Cut out holes for neck and arms. After you've warmed up and maybe changed into dry clothes, put your trash bag on while you wait for the start of the race. It'll keep you warm and dry. Just before the gun goes take it off and give it to a spectator or in a trash can.

I did this for my first 5k and was glad because it POURED DOWN RAIN. Now here's the funny part - it rained so hard that my running capris were got water logged and slide off my butt about 500m from the finish line. I took me a while to figure out why things were "drafty" back there!Embarassed

A baseball type cap is key to keeping rain off your face.  If it is warm-ish, I love running in the rain.  If it cold, then I am sorry.  Don't wear a jacket in order to keep yourself dry.  You sweat enough that you will be soaked from the inside if it is water-proof enough to keep you dry from the outside.  Only add the jacket or other layers for warmth.

Put a dry sweatshirt in a plastic bag with your sherpa or in your car so you can change and get warm again.

Have fun!

Same as above, it decent temps I love running in the rain.  I am actually a tad bit faster (probably because I enjoy it more).  Wear a running hat as mentioned to keep the rain out of your eyes.  If cold put on a pair of thin socks then a plastic bag then another sock to keep feet dry and warm (try this now before the race to see if you have any issues, find the right bag or plastic wrap, etc).  If cold check out hand warmers you can put in your pocket.

Otherwise enjoy!!!!!

Thanks, everyone.  It looks like the low for the day is supposed to be 41 degrees, and the high is 59 deg, so maybe it'll be around 45-50 when we're running?

I will definitely use some of your suggestions, and above all else, I will suck it up and decide to have an awesome time no matter what!

A lot of great advice has been dispensed already, so I'll just add to what JollyRoger said above. I love running in the rain! The sound is incredibly soothing, to me. Once you accept that you'll be wet, you'll be fine. Best of luck, and be sure to brag about running in the rain when you're done.

My very first 10k (a very long time ago) was also in the rain.  I, like you, had never run in the rain (why would anyone do that? I thought??).  Well, I had a wonderful run and now think nothing of running in the rain.  A few things to think about:  It is just water...it won't hurt you, you won't drown and you will dry off eventually!    I always wear a cap to keep it from running down my face, a water resistant jacket (not water proof - that won't breathe and you will die of heat!).  Other than that, you will get wet and it will be fun anyway!  Good Luck in your race!!  Wink
