gobey007 - 2012-11-19 4:57 AM Anyone think that the swim was long?

I only checked on some friend's times and for a wetsuit race times didn't seem all that fast.

Maybe not enough room to get going. Crowded until turn around and super crowded when you went under a bridge

I have a Garmin 910x and it said I swam 2.64 miles (not including swimming to the start). I might have zig zagged but with an out and back course, it seems like it was a little long.

Congrats to everyone who finished!

I didn't have a great day out there. My swim was awesome and I felt great for the first 2 loops of the bike. I was drinking a ton according to my plan and took salt pills and ate my gus. But during the third loop my stomach revolted and I was losing fluid faster than I was putting it in. With that, I lost all my power and started getting really light headed and woozy.

I came out of the bathroom at the last turn around and sat down on the ground for a second and started shivering and shaking...probably not a good sign. There was an ambulance there and they took me in to check my vitals and my HR wouldn't get below 120 even after laying down for 10 minutes. They kept me there for almost 45 minutes and by that point it was close to the cutoff and I was still feeling sick so I had to call it a day. My first DNF ever. I am so disappointed but I will definitely give this distance another shot. I felt like I was prepared physically. I'm just not sure what happened out there.

I'm proud of everyone that finished! Great job!

I spent most of the day doubled over in the port o John. Lost at least an hour. Oh well, good news is I finished it and my legs feel great. I could easily run today-not very sore at all! I was bummed big time with my time, especially since my fitness level held up way better than expected. Very happy to finish, it was a fun experience.

Congrats to all my fellow athletes who braved the course yesterday.  PR, DNF or just another race...... you are all warriors!!!

Personally, I had another FUN day on the course yesterday (much like last year).  Enjoyed most of the swim, all of the bike, and the run was special as my multisport group (ONE) ran the aid station at the marina.  It was so awesome running by them all three (3) times, and always gave me a little more energy.

Much more to come on my RR in the coming days, but needless to say, 11:52:43 is a major PR (beats last year by more than an hour), and I felt great, even after the race.

On to IM AZ 2013 (and everything in-between)!!!!

congratulations to all!!I had about as good of a race as I could have hoped for. The only major problem was the last 12 miles of the bike into the first 2 miles into the run. Other than that, nutrition was good. finished at 14:37 which was about 7 min later than what I expected.

Congrats everyone on your solid efforts and achievements out there. I'm at the airport now waiting for my flight home, looking forward to writing my race report. I had a great day out there, plenty of good stuff and plenty of pain. My stretch goal was to finish with a 12:xx:xx on the board and I somehow managed a 12:17!

Good times!

My goal was to come in under 12 hours and I couldn't quite get there.  Overall, I felt like I ran a smart race, had fun and gave it all I had, got a 31 minute PR: 12:08:07.  Congrats to all the other BT'ers out there!

They are coming (the race reports). Short answer: 10:18:51. A little off of my ultimate goal but I am still quite happy. It gives me something to work toward next year.

To everyone thinking about signing up for next year; this is a great a race. I really enjoyed the whole thing. I even liked the multi loop run course. It allowed me to know what was coming and break the race up in to manageable chunks.

Sign up and do this race!

Did anyone see yellow Crocs guy? I got a glimpse of those bright yellow shoes going the other way on the bike. I assume he ran in them too? As for me, I had a good day until mile 19 of the run, when my IT band refused to play anymore. I power-walked the rest with gritted teeth and finished in 14:28. Considering my best case scenario was 14:00, I'm happy with it! I saw Marianne twice- in the changing tent and on the run, and Briana toward the end of her run, looking really strong. It looks like several of us finished within a few minutes of each other, but I was too focused to notice by that point!

That Crocs guy is one of my team mates from HI. He cycles and runs in them. Even got an ST interview too.

I had a perfectly executed day until the run... I was on track to meet my goal but the run was just mostly pavement which coincidentally destroys my quads and the reason I never run on them. Ended up walking a lot on the 2nd and 3rd loop and crossed the line at 12:13:15. Not bad for my first and only IM. I might be a one and done at hat distance.

Sounds like most everyone had stomach issues at some point, myself included. Wonder if it was the water from the swim? Overall I was pleased with my race at 13:49:58. That's a 6 minute PR. My swim was two minutes slower than when I did Florida, so I'm ok with that. I had a really good bike for me at 6:42:12, but the stomach issues started on the run (along with what I thought was a rock in my shoe that I stopped to check 3 times - never could find anything.). I was secretly hoping to go under 5 hours for the marathon (I did 5:04 at Florida) but it wasn't meant to be. Still got a PR so that's all that matters. I had fun out there, road near Brooksinc for a while, high fived people and told them all thanks and really enjoyed going down the finisher chute. I also really enjoyed the get together Thursday night. It was nice to meet everyone. Happy recovery and safe travels.

I am finally an ironman!! I started cramping on the swim a little bit...i have not cramped on the swim in a long time. Started freaking out a little bit. On the bike i was cramping a little bit also, so i started taking endurolytes and bananas and it made it made feel better. I ended up finishing the bike in 6:45. Run was pretty bad. Felt like i was not going to make it around 8 miles. I was battling with myself to finish. I took alot of broth and cola...it got me through it. Ended up finishing in 14.24 hours. I just wanted to thank everyone here for all the advice and support for all these months...it helped alot.

It was tougher than I thought it'd be. I got a right cross on the swim that bloodied my nose but after a minute if contemplation I just put my head back in the water and started swimming again. Then a foot to the eye popped me up and rearranged my goggles. Good times. I am not surprised by my slow swim as Im not much of a swimmer. I started having lower GI distress about 75 percent of the way in. I finally got outta the water and I hope to never have to swim again!!! 1:43:XX

The bike was harder than I'd expected. The stomach issues reappeared on the second loop and after a false start, I managed to evacuate, which was nice. The wind shifted so loop one was fun on the way back but loops two n three sucked all the way around. The stomach issues came back on loop three and I had to stop two more times. Oh well, I got to the end of the bike just glad to be done. 6:42:XX

So my entire goal was to catch Monica on the run. I ran the first two miles at about a 9/min pace an finally caught her at about mile 2.5. We ran/walked/walked/ran/walked/etc. it in together, held hands a lot of the way and generally pushed each other to the finish at 15:21:XX.

The race was tough but we got it done!!!

Great meeting you all! Look us up if ya come to Chicago!

I made it too!   Great day mostly as planned...Yeah, I drank too much water and my stomach felt icky and bloated for the entire race.  Was all set to come in 13:50ish, but skipped the last aid station (Just one mile to go, right?) then bonked HARD and literally couldn't see straight in the last mile...I just kept thinking - I'm going to be one of those guys that collapses in the chute! Staggered most of the last mile, and someone had a GU that I couldn't eat, but absorbed a little in my cheek.  Got me through the chute at 14:05 ish.

I'm so glad I got a chance to meet those of you that I did and see some of you on the course.  Congrats to everyone on their shiny new medal!

We got it done!! It was a really, really tough day for me - but in the end I accomplished my 3 goals... I didn't die, I finished, and I finished with a smile on my face and Tony by my side. The swim was nothing short of a mosh pit for pretty much the whole thing and I don't think I got some free space to swim for more than a few strokes, but in the end I was happy with my 1:18:xx. And after getting out of the water I got really emotional thinking "holy crap, I'm really doing this!! I'm DOING an Ironman!" The bike is where things started to fall apart. My first loop felt GREAT! Towards the end my back started to act up (only a matter of time when you've broken your back twice) and I had to pull off at the first aid station after the first loop to try and stretch it out. By the time I got to the turn around, my stomach started to revolt as well as my back. More stretching. The third loop was agony. Again stopping at the 1st aid station in the third loop, not able to take in much in terms of calories and about 3/4 of a mile from the turn around everything seized up and I had to pull off to the side of the road to see if I could get my lower body to stop cramping. My first loop was right on target with what I wanted in 2 hrs, so I'm happy with that. I was also SOOO happy to be off my bike and then a volunteer helped me to stretch again in T2. I was so thankful for the volunteers!! I knew I was in for a world of hurt on the 'run' and I wasn't let down in the slightest! My stomach was still incredibly nauseated so I couldn't really take anything in - but thankfully Tony found me soon and kept me going. If it wasn't for him, I don't know that I would have kept going. He was awesome!! I ended up in the med tent for an hour and a half after the race, but we finished!! If I ever do this again, I'm going to make sure I'm trained properly. That also would have been good. Congrats to everyone!!!

"Sounds like most everyone had stomach issues at some point, myself included. Wonder if it was the water from the swim?"

I swallowed half of the lake during my swim and had no gut issues at all so that is my N of 1 that drinking water straight out of the Tempe Town Lake is fine for your digestion

Looking back now 24I hours later, it was a great day for me. Best parts were meeting everyone at the get together and swim. Was really great. Al even was in finishing area when I was done. My race went pretty good overall. Wasn't done in the light which was a good thing. Swim and bike went pretty much to plan. Run fell apart on second loop but recovered some to finish a little better. Finished alone I will the chute so got to hear my name called. Finished at 13:19 so missed under 13 goal but oh well.
More details and rr to come when I am not typing on my phone.

Congratulations everyone! 36 hours of recovery and a great wife gives one perspective. I had a tough day out there. This is my 4th go around at IM but for some reason I was more nervous for this one than any before. Did not sleep one minute the night before which is unusual for me. Thought I had really bad pre race jitters standing at the swim but in retrospect I think I had some stomach thing from the start. Felt horrible the whole swim and had a lot of contact. My wife later told me when an exited the swim I was pale as a ghost and she thought I looked terrible. My body rallied for the bike. Legs felt great but was just nauseous the whole time. I was amazed what a great split I was having despite keeping it innZ1-z2 the whole time. Things went bad on the run quickly and basically walked the marathon. Was shooting for 12:00 and finished at 13:35. Was pretty disappointed but have gotten a lot of prospective since and am now quite happy with my race. More to come in RR.

gobey007 - 2012-11-19 4:48 AM Congratulations to everyone I hope you all had an amazing day.

I saw a few BTrs, mariane before the swim; Jorge floating next to me in the water, on each bike loop and the first part of the run...I couldn't get away from that kid

Had a good day. My run started to fall apart @ mile 10. Dehydrated is my guess. Did run/walk to try and recover while drinking at aid stations. @18 I tried to pick it up. @20/21 (fuzzy) I did the math in my head and had an hour to beat 13:00 maybe 12:45. I started to kill myself to try and salvage a bad run. Looking at splits I laughed as at this point I barely made 10min pace and it was agony 12:42:02. A few minutes to spare. ... cant sleep but tired ...

haha I know right... : )......I think our splits were really close in the swim and bike.....sorry to hear about your run....but all in all we made it.

Anyone  see Fireman Rob, I saw him on the second loop of the run and it was pretty inspiring....

I'm back at work and will start writing the race report here in a little bit.  So yesterday, woke up around 5am and couldn't sleep so decided to walk over to buy some finisher gear.  Had a good 1.5 mile walk over that was on part of the run course.  Was really surprised how well they cleaned up the area in just 5 hours.  You really couldn't tell a race of that magnitude took place the night before.  I spent a good chunk of change on some gear, got the jacket.

When I got back to the hotel, I decided to lay down for a couple minutes, and then 2 hours later my wife was waking me up saying the shuttle to the airport is leaving in 30 minutes.  I slept so hard during those 2 hours.  Then on the flight, slept another hour.  Got home, had some dinner and yes, fell asleep again at 7 and woke up at 6am this morning.  I guess my body was telling me I need to catch up on some sleep.

Even this morning, I have sooo many aches and pains, but they all bring some delight to me, they are all so worth it (even thought my middle toes on both feet are still numb).

On another topic, saw a tone of really great signs out there.  Some of my favorites:

Done trust a fart

365 days ago this seemed like a really good idea

Free nipple massage

Tired legs are sexy

and of course, Pain is temporary, Ironman is forever.

The spectators and volunteers were amazing, especially during the run.  I think that's what makes IMAZ such an incredible experience is having so many people around cheering you on and keeping you going.
