Subject: Favourite Christmas Songs

I realize it's Thanksgiving weekend in America (never mind the "real" Thanksgiving was weeks ago Surprised) ... but if you can please kindly move your thoughts forward to Christmas.

Every year I put together a mix CD of Xmas music for my peeps at work as my Secret Santa gift, and after several years I'm starting to run out of good ideas. So my question to the unendingly wise and experienced CoJ: What  are YOUR favourite Christmas songs, and who performs them?

For me, my Top 5 are:
Baby It's Cold Outside - Colin James & Roxanne Potvin
O Holy Night - Martina McBride
Christmas Convoy - Paul Brandt
Takin' Care of Christmas - Randy Bachman
Santa Baby -  Madonna

ADD TO THE LIST, PLEASE!

The Hallelujah Chorus (by any talented choir).  It's a very powerful and beautiful song in music, even though I don't get into the "meaning" of the words, but the musical movement of it just hits me.

I'll Be Home For Christmas - Bing Crosby.  Classic sound, great song.  Always at the top of the playlist especially when I was deployed over the holiday seasons.

Anything by Mariah Carrey. She has the best voice for Christmas music, IMO.

I love that song but it's not Shirley Temple. It's Gayla Peevey. One of the radio stations gave her one, real hippo, that she donated to a local zoo.

About two years ago, my husband got the Sufjan Stevens Christmas album, and it is actually really good. Some classics, some original songs, but all just earnestly sung.

"Come thou Font of Every Blessing"
and
"Lo How a Rose E'er Blooming"

I Believe In Father Christmas by Greg Lake

The Holly and the Ivy  by the Mediaeval Baebes.

Aimee Mann's version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman

Could go on a bit more but you get the drift.   The Mediaeval Baebes have a Christmas album out that I would recommend.

I'd like to second MadMathemagician's I Believe in Father Christmas by Greg Lake.

You could check out Christmas songs by Stompin' Tom Connors.  Can't get more Canuck than Stompin' Tom.  Or, Bare Naked Ladies have a few as well.

Bare Naked for the Holidays is on repeat for me over the month of December. And Straight No Chaser. Those are my go-tos.

  • Straight No Chaser has some nice stuff. As do Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Buffett, Amy Grant, and George Strait. And who can resist Bing Crosby.
