I'm sure there are plenty who ride/jog in the rain, but I'm just starting out.  How do you get past 'that point' and just do it??

Yesterday it was raining and 45 degrees here in NW Wisconsin. I had a 4.5 hour ride scheduled for my IM WI plan. It would have been soooooo easy to say to heck with it and wait a few days for better weather...but that screws up next week's schedule. I just put the long bike pants on, booties, rain coat, gloves, helmet and said "this is gonna suck but when I'm at mile 80 at IM WI next September I'll look back and be glad that I did this ride". It did suck, but when it was over it felt like putting money in the bank that you can withdraw on race day. Just get out there and think about your competition that may have decided not to. Good luck.

Just don't make it a big deal - it isn't!! I usually don't even realize its raining after the first few minutes. I'm also in WI and ran yesterday in the rain (about 50degrees) an except for the few gusts of wind I didn't notice it. This may happen for you too, Just get out and do it. I think you will be surprised at how little a deal it really is. I realize you are in thunder bay and will most likely be colder than me, but just add more layers - preferably rain layers

I ran a half marathon in pouring rain. There is no guarantee with weather on race day. The race takes place regardless of the weather conditions so if you are training for an event, it is best to learn to take the conditions as they come and deal with them. You will be better prepared for whatever mother nature serves up on the day of your event.

Unless it's very cold, I like running in the rain.  The rain keeps me cool and refreshed. I can also breathe easier than when it is cool and dry.  If you can find something that you like and appreciate in it, then the run will be much more enjoyable.  On the other hand, if you know you won't enjoy it, then why not just do some sort of indoor workout?

I like to run in the rain.... in fact, I look forward to it... especially when it's a nice cool rain. I throw a hat on, wear a long sleeve shirt, and go. I think you'll enjoy it so long as you are warm enough and wear a hat.

I used to struggle with running in the snow/rain, but now I find it refreshing and fun because it is different. I remember when it was snowing, dark and about 15 degrees outside and quite nasty, I had a fabulous run and the only others I saw outside where the hardcore running group that runs through my neighbohood twice a week...it felt sweet to feel I was more like them than not. Plus it makes me feel great knowing others probably are skipping their runs while I'm getting stronger/faster. Riding in the rain, I'm not a big fan of but I have a trainer and can do my trainer rides.

Having the right gear and clothing really makes weather a non-issue for most things. Maybe not swimming in a lightening storm or a tsunami, but it can make most other things quite enjoyable.

As I learned yesterday, when you train in the worst weather (running for me- I hate biking in bad weather but I'm sure this applies to that too) and then race day comes and it's rainy and windy and cold you have a huge edge over your competitors.  Your thinking, "great, I don't have to worry about overheating" and they're thinking "what the heck am I doing out here?".  Guess who does better and has more fun?

The tipping point for me came form reading the Lance Armstrong book (like so many people), him and an English rugby player called Jonny Wilkinson.

Basically what they both said is that they would rather be out in the cold, wet and wind because they know that their competition may not be. Hence Wilkinson was out practicing his kicking with just his brother for company on Christmas day. I too notice that on those filthy days (and let's be honest, not too many of those in Sydney!) the roads and trails are quieter and by being out their I'm clocking up miles that someone else isn't.

For some reason, training in the rain is also more rewarding - nothing better than getting into the rythm out there blinking the rain out of your eyes and warming up enough to banish the chill before coming back home to a nice hot bath.

It rain during my workout yesterday and with threats of hail (which I was kind of excited about) it is also scheduled to rain the entire weekend here in Philadelphia, and we're have exceptional weather, so its rainy and on average about 80 degrees (very humid and sticky) I love the rain because it kind of offsets the sweat and cools me down which makes it easier for me to run longer. Running/Biking in the rain is actually no different that running/biking with clear sky's just put on a basball cap or some glasses and get out there. We're not witches so we won't melt besides its good practice just in case whatever race you decide to do rains that day. As for as I experienced at the Tri's I've been to they have NEVER cancelled because of rain. They may cancel the swim due to water quality, but they just turn the race into a Duathlon in which case you are still running and biking in the rain.

Just get out there and see how you do, I guarantee it won't be a problem.
