I am just starting to dust the cobwebs off my bike and get training - It has certainly been a great break but it is time to get started.

WOW - 184 Days until the race. I can't wait!!!

Count me in, my first HIM!!  If you are near St Paul and need a training buddy for runs (I am slow) or biking, let me know.

I got a question for everyone racing Racine this year and are following one of the BT programs. I am planning on following one of the HIM plans but was wondering what plan the majority of people will be following on here. I noticed there is differences in the free one compared to the silver plan. Just wanted to see which one most are following as I would like to compare with others throughout the training and discuss any questions about the plan as we were going though it. I personally was thinking about the silver but this is my first HIM so any help would be appreciated. Thank You

Hey dd, I am going with the free-bee BT 20 weeker.  I followed this for the first 12ish weeks of my first HIM last year and got a little nervous so I hired a tri coach to get me through the last 2 months leading up to my race.  I have to say, I would have been A-Ok sticking with the BT plan.  Hiring a tri coach was not this awesome insigtful experience.

How is everyone doing on booking a place to stay?  My husband and I (plus Princess the chocolate lab) wanted to make a vacation out of it, but I am not finding many vacation rentals nearby.

#3 for me. Love this race, it's in my back yard and love to get on the course and train. Any questions about the course, just shoot. Generally there's a handful of people from Racine on the board. The BT training plans are great, if your on a plan you'll be ready. The plans an outline. If you put in the miles you'll really enjoy this race.

Thanks for your offer - I'll take you up on it!  So how tough are the hills on the bike?  If I remember correctly, the description is "rolling course with some challenging hills mixed in".

Aghhhh!!! Crisis already...I broke my foot!  I'm in a walking boot for a month, not sure when I'll be able to run again.  Of course this happened the day I signed up for the Martian Half-Marathon (in April) and the Detroit Marathon (not until September).

I am going to get in the pool tomorrow (if I can just navigate those 20 steps or so from locker room to pool) and try the bike by next week (if I can walk in a brace, I should be able to pedal with a bike shoe, right?)

AGGGHHHHHH!!!

OK, I feel better.  Now I can contribute something intelligent to the conversation.

dd - I also think the 'free' 20 wk plan is adequate.  I used it my first year.  The second year a friend of mine who had done 9 IMs and has a degree in exercise physiology made a plan for me, but there wasn't anything magical about it.  Last year I made up my own plan and that is what I will be using this year.

One thing that really helped me was working 3-4 13 mile runs into the plan.  That way on race day when I get to the run, I can just tell myself "it's ONLY 13 miles, just a run work out, no big deal"

(I also did four 60 mile bikes hoping I would think the 54 miles was easy, it didn't work.)

There's a small hill out of transition just to get from the beach to road level. Make sure to rack your bike in a gear you can jump on and get up the hill cause there's no time to shift. After that rollers. Seriously no real climbs, if you like to stay in the saddle there's no reason to get out.

Hi group! I'm hoping to join you all this year at Racine. I had foot surgery (heel spur removal) on Dec.1 and am just getting back to a bit of running. If I stay on track and don't hurt myself, I'll be able to make the run. I'll see how things are going and officially throw down the $$$ by April.1.

I'm debating between Racine and Muncie, but leaning towards Racine, so I'll hang with you guys for now, if you don't mind.. I haven't registered yet, but mostly because still trying to recover from Chicago Marathon registration

looking forward to a normal Half-Ironman experience this year! Short of the road eating my tires again, anything I do will get me a PR lol

Hey everybody, figured since I'm starting the free BT program here in a few days I should jump into the forum as well.

1st 1/2 iron distance, and only past tri experience is the Chi Tri (Oly..but with a mountain bike..yeah..will not be doing that again), but also various races like the F^3 1/2 marathon a few weeks ago, and other events like Tough Mudder.

Taking this one pretty seriously as I've invested in a good road bike, had a trainer given to me for indoor rides, and just..literally minutes ago..ordered my wetsuit.

Looking forward to sharing and hearing about everyone elses prep for Racine!

Cheers,

Brian

20 Week BT plan starts tomorrow!

I did my math wrong once before, so maybe I have it wrong again- doesn't the 20 week BT plan actually start on Monday?

Lena,

After reading your race report from last year, you HAVE to come get some revenge on this race!  Last year before I did it I heard people saying about how they want to get revenge on this course and didn't understand.  Then after the brutal conditions last year and an ailing injury, I can't wait to get revenge!  I hope you do it this year and kick it's butt!

Pretty sure it starts tomorrow. July 15 - 20 weeks = February 26 from my calculations. Unless I'm doing some sort math wrong. Anyone else think it starts tomorrow or Monday? Guess we should have figured this out way before the day before, haha.

I have it imported into my training log, and it starts on Monday. Don't think it really matters, though? One way or another, we all will have to work out
