Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 29/52
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:30am had a bagel and a banana. Got ready to go. I have been feeling a little sick since Friday. I think its a head cold or something. Congestion....slight runny nose...head a little cloudy.. the usual fair. I figured since I didn't have a fever and I already paid I'd give it a shot.
Event warmup:

I dragged the teenagers (my daughter and her friend) with me. So I didn't do any type of warmup....just talked with them and got things ready to go. Let me tell ya they LOVED getting up at 4:00am. I had to make a couple of deals with them to get them to go.
Swim
  • 23m 4s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had a little trouble at the start of the swim. I think I was a little freaked out and I was having trouble breathing with the wetsuit. I felt it was constricting my neck. I ended up breathing on every stoke as opposed to every third like I usually do. I eventually got into a rhythm....a slow one. I can't complain too much considering it was my first open water. I felt good about it overall.
Transition 1
  • 03m 24s
Comments:

A much slower transition time than I wanted. I felt a little unorganized and couldn't quite get it together.
What would you do differently?:

Give a little more thought to my transitions in terms of preperation
Bike
  • 51m 47s
  • 18 miles
  • 20.86 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt good on the bike and am happy with the results. After driving the course the other day I was beginning to think I may not be able to go that fast.
Transition 2
  • 05m 8s
Comments:

I had a little trouble getting my shoes on. Every time I would bend down I would get cramps in my legs. Had to take a moment and eat some gel and shake them out.
What would you do differently?:

same as before and plan my nutrition better
Run
  • 31m 41s
  • 4 miles
  • 07m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

The hills! When I do most of my training it is for the most part flat. I wasn't prepared for the one incline and of course it didn't get any smaller the second time around. So.... i ran a little slower than I wanted.
What would you do differently?:

Add hills to my training
Post race
Warm down:

Had lots to drink and a few bananas. Looked for my daughter and her friend. I found them sleeping in my truck. They watched through the swim and some of the bike.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I think I was just a little tired today. Practice the transitions. Overall I had a good race today with lots of things to look back on and adjust. It was fun and I'm looking forward to the next one. The times are approx. There was no chip times.

Overall HR avg. 159
HR max. 176

Good job.  I remember dragging my surly teenage daughter and son to a race. My daughter said she was scarred for life when she saw a man running in a speedo.

Thanks! That's funny my daughter made a similar comment about the one guy (at least that I saw) that was wearing a true speedo at this event. Which she proceeded to point out to her friend as they both gave a little snicker. I think it was a kind of silver. It was quite flashy.
